Can it be used to add audio from a mixer to video from a camera and be in sync (audio matches speaker's mouth)?

Accepted Answer

Video cameras are digital, and therefore will do a bunch of processing to the video signal before it exits the camera as SDI or HDMI. Most audio systems are analog, which have NO delay and therefore the analog audio in this case often is "early" in relation to the digital video. The video delay might be just one frame, which is maybe 30 milliseconds, but it may be noticeable in relation to the audio. The Black Magic audio embedder does not have any audio delay options in it - it will INSERT your analog audio source into the digital video stream, but if those two signals are already out of sync this box will not fix it.

Is there any possibility for you to run the output of the audio mixer into an XLR input on the video camera? If you could do that, then the combined audio and video exiting the SDI port on camera should be in sync.

To recap, this embedder will not CAUSE any sync issues - it adds no delay - but on the same token cannot FIX delay that might already exist in the signals being combined.

Is video required to obtain the audio into SDI?

I honestly don't know. That is an interesting thought. It will recognize a lost signal and switch to the backup so maybe if video is not present it sees that as "no signal" and won't output anything.   I suggest contacting Blackmagic support directly.  They are very good and very helpful.
