This is a nice sturdy clamp for photography (or other) uses. As can be told from the desertcart photos, the crab claw, tightening screw and handle, and balls in the arm are metal. But to my surprise, the arm itself is metal (looks to be die-cast), and the knob to tighten the arm also appears to be metal as well. The clamp, arm, and mount all seem to be of good quality and should last for quite a long time (only time will tell on this). It clamps down nicely to both wood boards and to round pipes, although I suspect the maximum diameter round pipe it will hold onto is smaller than the maximum size flat board it will hold onto. But for clamping onto tripod legs/arms or onto bike frames/handlebars it should work very well, and be quite secure. I have it clamped onto a board at the moment holding a Nikon SB-600 flash unit and it is doing a proper job of holding up the flash unit. All in all I am pleased with the clamp and am happy with the purchase. There are two different sizes shown by the manufacturer on the listing for the maximum opening distance of the clamp. The articulated arm Is exactly the same length with both the 1138 and 2164. the only difference between them is the plastic ball-clamp used, the 1138 has a thicker and more polished-looking ball head section. The strength and function are identical in both. With less than a dollar difference in price, I'd choose the model 1138.
