The book perfectly explains that our skin's role is to eliminate toxins from our system. Synthetic clothes doesn't breathe, therefore you literally suffocate yourself when you're wearing these clothes. On the other hand, cotton, for example, has great breathability, it also has antimicrobial properties which you won't find in synthetic clothes, of course.Natural fabrics offer a good temperature regulation and are not filled with formaldehyde or other nasty chemicals that contribute to cancer, allergies and bunch of other illnesses. However, there's one natural fabric I do have a problem with is SILK. Cotton and linen are neutral fabrics and don't emit electrostatics, but silk actually does. My silk clothes would get charged every time I sit down on a plastic chair or vinyl floor, which is very annoying. So I avoid silk as well even though it's a natural fabric. Another, I think from this book: a lady bought several pair of jeans for her child who started getting ill at school. Smart mom realized the timing of the illness correlated w/the jeans so wondered if any connection. Turned out that she'd gotten them at a salvage store (I love salvage, garage sales, thrift stores, so I am not knocking them.); truck load of merchandise included the jeans which were involved in a shipment wreck where chemicals (agricultural?) spilled on them. After the jeans were tested by authorities, Mom was told they would be ok once laundered. Reminded me of a home ec student who said that she didn't wear new clothes before she washed them!
