## Questions & Answers

**Q: Spare cutting head upx86, does this work for up86?**
A: To repeat the review I posted below: YES - but, be aware: the instructions are in diagram form which I found inscrutable. Apart from the addition of the bright orange guide jaw, there are two important differences to the design of this (UPX86 version) compared to the original UP86 cutter head:
1. The plastic part which connects the cutting head cord with the handle's flat strap is in two parts on the new version. This meant that I had to unthread the flat strap from the handle and loop it around the new part. I'd suggest finding a YouTube video about replacing the rope and handle for some clues about how best to manage this.
2. The old head was secured to the handle by a D-shaped plastic fitting which went INSIDE the D-shaped tube with a very tight fit. The new part fits OVER or OUTSIDE the D-shaped tube and is drilled to be secured with a bolt (not supplied with the new head). Because I didn't want to risk the head getting stuck on a branch and pulling free from the shaft, I drilled appropriate holes in the shaft. a 40mm M5 nut and pan-head bolt does the job (and, obviously, you'll need to drill a 5mm hole through the shaft).

So, a bit of a faff but it all took less than an hour including thinking time and cost £40 rather than £90+ for a complete new tool. And if you want a really long, tangle-free, easy to use tree pruner, this one lasted for over a decade of fairly regular abuse before the head broke so it certainly does the job.

**Q: Is this compatible with the Tree Pruner 1023625?**
A: The true answer must be "I don't know". HOWEVER - I have been buying this design in preference since it was a Wilkinson Sword product. I have x3 of these things with the circular angled head / bowl cutter (x1 short, x2 extendable). All 3 have the same design in the head. Your 1023625 design looks identical except for the clamping lever at the side of the head (the large one on mine catches in the branches occasionally and can become slack). The internal mechanism MUST be the same.

The flat strap runs along the handle, acting on the internal sledge near the head, which then acts upon the connected cord. This, in turn, pulls on the cutter. Both short and extendible designs use the same internals except that the length of the flat strap needs to be cut accordingly. You will easily find the instructions for the flat strap installation (supplied I believe). What you will NOT find (unless Fiskars have had a bad attack of common sense in the interim) are the instructions for installing the replacement cord inside the head.

For this last, you will need at least x3 hands, pain free fingers, a friend who does not mind being shouted at / makes tea, the patience of a saint and plenty of time. There is a YouTube clip but that jumps at the critical moment (probably because the fellow wishes that he had never been born)

Hope that this helps.

**Q: Is it compatible with UP86 ?**
A: Should be. The UP86 is the extendible version. In this the length of the flat strap supplied is important. From memory, the length supplied is ample and may need cutting to size OR dividing into the smaller (end bobble to sliding handle) and larger components (Cutting head to sliding handle). That said, the smaller component hardly ever fails so the strap supplied can be dedicated to the larger component. If it is the "string" cord which has failed then this part is the same in all of the 'bowl' (angle-able head) cutters as is the internal sledge/slide. Re-threading the "string" is fun - see disparaging comments elsewhere.

**Q: I only need the locking nut . Is this available and where?**
A: It's not clear which 'locking nut' that you need. There is nothing special about any of the nuts on the entire pole. They are a mixture of ordinary nuts and 'self locking' nuts (the last are ones in which the outermost thread has either a metal deformation OR a plastic insert to keep the nut's position as tightened on the bolt). If the ordinary nuts need to be kept in position then they usually sit in one of the plastic knobs (with or without a lever) and it's the friction in the plastic which holds the nut 'tightened' (NB the orange one on the head used to have a protruding lever which could catch in the branches)

## Customer Reviews

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Perfect

Great product. Fitted fine.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A very good spare repair.
*by H***D on 6 April 2020*

My first problem was the packaging. Dont get me wrong I'm not one of those tree huggers who thinks , the world is going to end because I put my shrink wrapped pork chop in a carrier bag and drove home in my 3 litre BMW on my own. But these are three small flat items that could have easily fitted in a small jiffy envelope. It came from fiskars in a cardboard sleeve three times the size of the items ,that had a hard plastic front . Then amazon packers placed it in a box about seven or eight times longer deeper and wider than the spares. Then filled the box with grey packing paper to prevent the spares moving around in transit I suppose. Now if a thing is made of steel and galvanised metal manufactured to work in a robust outdoor environment.does it need any of all that. As I stated earlier I'm not a fan of that strange girl from Sweden or any of her followers but I now have to get rid of all this stuff and as my council are getting on board with the global warming thing I have to obey. The daft bit is you have to drive to the recycling centre on your own in your car to get rid of what is a cardboard box . So back to the spares I had to get instructions again from you tube as the instructions printed on the packaging were scant. Here's an idea cut back on the packaging and the money saved could produce a decent instruction sheet. Removing the chain link to remove the blade was tricky I used a long nose pliers. Once that was off replacing the old bent blade was easy enough . However putting the top bit on the chain to lock everything down not so easy. It took a lot of fiddling and trial and error. In the end I managed it but still cant explain how I did it ,I was trying to pull push squeeze all at the same time and it locked in. Lastly fitting the spring was easy using a pliers. To sum up far to much packaging so if tree hugging is your thing leave well alone ,but if tree hugging was your thing you wouldn't be repairing a tool to chop bits of them off. Not an easy fit but with a little time effort you tube and persistence it's not to bad. This was an expensive tool and I'm pleased to have been able to repair it relatively cheaply. I would reccomend this if you need one it's a lot cheaper than the alternative.
