## Description

An instant New York Times bestseller and Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick from beloved author Alice Hoffman—the spellbinding prequel to Practical Magic
.
Find your magic. For the Owens family, love is a curse that began in 1620, when Maria Owens was charged with witchery for loving the wrong man. Hundreds of years later, in New York City at the cusp of the sixties, when the whole world is about to change, Susanna Owens knows that her three children are dangerously unique. Difficult Franny, with skin as pale as milk and blood red hair, shy and beautiful Jet, who can read other people’s thoughts, and charismatic Vincent, who began looking for trouble on the day he could walk. From the start Susanna sets down rules for her children: No walking in the moonlight, no red shoes, no wearing black, no cats, no crows, no candles, no books about magic. And most importantly, never, ever, fall in love. But when her children visit their Aunt Isabelle, in the small Massachusetts town where the Owens family has been blamed for everything that has ever gone wrong, they uncover family secrets and begin to understand the truth of who they are. Yet, the children cannot escape love even if they try, just as they cannot escape the pains of the human heart. The two beautiful sisters will grow up to be the memorable aunts in Practical Magic
, while Vincent, their beloved brother, will leave an unexpected legacy. Alice Hoffman delivers “fairy-tale promise with real-life struggle” (
The New York Times Book Review
) in a story how the only remedy for being human is to be true to yourself. Thrilling and exquisite, real and fantastical, The Rules of Magic is “irresistible…the kind of book you race through, then pause at the last forty pages, savoring your final moments with the characters” (
USA TODAY
, 4/4 stars).

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ A Spellbinding Prequel
*by on Reviewed in the United States July 16, 2025*

A Spellbinding Prequel Full of Heart and MagicAlice Hoffman’s The Rules of Magic is a luminous, evocative novel that beautifully blends magical realism with emotional depth and literary elegance. As a prequel to her beloved novel Practical Magic, this book stands on its own as a richly woven tale of love, identity, and the cost of being different.Set against the vibrant backdrops of 1960s New York City and rural Massachusetts, the story follows siblings Franny, Jet, and Vincent Owens as they come of age under the shadow of a long-standing family curse: anyone they fall in love with is doomed. Hoffman explores this premise with both sensitivity and imagination, crafting characters that are irresistibly flawed and deeply human. The writing is lyrical without being overdone—every page feels infused with magic, both literal and metaphorical. Hoffman’s gift lies in her ability to make the fantastical feel grounded and emotionally true. The magical elements enhance, rather than overshadow, the emotional journeys of the characters. The Rules of Magic is ultimately a story about acceptance—of one’s gifts, one’s past, and the power of love despite the risks. It’s a book that invites readers to believe in the inexplicable while also reminding them of the real magic in resilience, connection, and hope.Whether you’re a longtime fan of the Owens family or discovering them for the first time, this novel casts a lasting effect on the reader.Alice Hoffman’s The Rules of Magic is a luminous, evocative novel that beautifully blends magical realism with emotional depth and literary elegance. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Liked it better than Practical Magic
*by on Reviewed in the United States December 17, 2018*

The Rules of Magic is the prequel to Practical Magic. It tells the story of grey-eyed Aunt Francis and Jet, and their brother Vincent. To understand the context, the movie adaptation of Practical Magic has become a cult film in the Craft community and it is obvious had an impact on the author. In the first book the subject of witchcraft was much more implied. In the current work witchery is right out in the open from the first few chapters onward. The title is based on rules set by the matriarchs in the family. Rules designed to manage the magical legacy that runs through the bloodline. The first being Maria Owns who left behind a journal. The next is the aunts chic mother, a former Parisian model returned to New York and determined to raise her children free of the dark stigma (and curse) attached to the Owens name, and lastly, great aunt Isobelle, the current designee of the marvelous magical house, gardens, and family grimoire. The two witch sisters and their warlock brother break every rule set by their mother. Vincent finds THE MAGUS, a legendary banned book of ceremonial magic. The sisters wear black every day despite their mother's disapproval and grow night blooming flowers on the window sills of their Manhattan townhouse. On her seventeenth birthday Francis receives a letter from aunt Isobelle inviting her to spend the summer in the Owens House, an invitation her mother Susanna dare not refuse. Soon enough her three children are off to a "magical" summer in Massachusetts.Summer in the old house isn't all fun and tipsy drunken chocolate cake. Isobel is pleasant enough and the girls certainly do receive an education from the customers who come scratching on their aunt's back door in the middle of the night, but there is that curse to contend with. Francis learns about it in the slim journal of Maria Owens kept under lock and key in the local library, but doesn't believe it until the girls watch in horror as their summer flings get struck by lightening. More follow as the town boys can't resist the dangerous attraction of the Owens girls. Vincent seems immune, but then again, the fourteen year old youth doesn't love any of the girls and older women he bones throughout the summer.Eventually summer comes to an end but not before Jet falls for the son of the town minister who belongs to a family descended from the witch hunter who ruined Maria Owens and set the curse in motion. Francis leaves determined to save her childhood sweetheart, while Vincent leaves knowing more than he should from gazing into the depths of the black mirror kept hidden in aunt Isobelle's greenhouse. These events set in motion the tale of their lives until the arrival of Sally and Gillian Owens. In all honesty, I liked The Rules of Magic better than Practical Magic. The theme of bloodline witchery is bolder, the characters have more depth, and the story-lines are better developed. Is it award winning literature like John Updike's The Witches of Eastwick? Absolutely not, but this was a delightful holiday read and a good gift to myself.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Magical read

This book is a beautifully written story about magic, family, love, heartbreak, and all the complicated things that tie us together. It’s about more than witches and spells it’s about family, resilience, and how we carry the past with us while trying to build our own future. A haunting, heartfelt read with just the right amount of magic.
