Just what I wanted
I need a few more 4" grinders. I have an old dependable Milwaukee but the spindle lock is wearing out and i`m l tired of always having to change disks for different applications in the middle of a job. I went with the DWE4012 because, I`m very happy with DeWalt products and the price was right and I wanted a flapper switch instead of a lock on switch like my Milwaukee. No I am not trashing Milwaukee in any way, shape or form and have my share of Milwaukee tools and very happy with them. Anyway, I`m very pleased with this grinder and particularly with the flapper switch. MUCH safer than any lock switch. Anyone who has ever spent any amount of time with grinders will have a few bone chilling stories to tell, usually with the 7-9 inchers but the 4 inchers can be just as dangerous there is a lot of torque. The switch safety isn`t an issue whatsoever, just get used to how you swipe your hand. If it starts sticking later on and getting clogged up, a shot of Kroil and a few shots of air should free everything up. Now, I heard some whining about a spanner wrench not coming with the tool and only an allen wrench. Well, I`ll take the allen wrench over the spanner wrench any day of the week. It provides much more leverage to loosen. No need to tighten any disks you put on. Hand tighten with a gloved hand and you are good to go. If it makes you feel better to use the wrench, if anything just give it a tap with the heel of your hand. The rotation of the grinder and friction will tighten the locking collar. In my opinion the allen wrench technique is an upgrade and puts spanner wrenches, where they belong, right out on the back porch. 5 stars

Switch Safety Latch Sticks
I bought this to replace a 25 year old DeWalt angle grinder of similar size. The new one has a better (stronger) spindle lock to hold it when tightening the arbor nut as the old one failed long ago. The old one also has a paddle switch with a safety lock/latch that is sticky and difficult to move so the switch can be turned on and this new one is no better. On the old one, I finally removed it since it was such a pain and I will likely end up doing the same with this new one even though it's not safe to do so. FYI, I also have two pro-model angle grinders made by a well known Japanese manufacturer and both of these have safety locks that work very well. Not very difficult to do so can't figure out why DeWalt can't get it right. Other than the safety latch, the grinder works well and is light and reasonable powerful. I deducted one star for the PITA safety lock/latch.

The secret of the allen wrench!
Wow, I can't believe how something so simple can become such a problem. It turns out the ALLEN WRENCH FITS IN 2 OF THE 4 HOLES IN THE SPANNER NUT, that's it. Why didn't anyone else mention this? Especially Dewalt, why didn't they mention it in their manual? Sure, there was a couple of hints in the reviews and questions, but they were all too vague. I finally took a really close look at the flange nut and discovered it. Now that I've said that, it really doesn't matter much to me anyway. I always hand-tighten grinding wheels and brushes since the right-hand rotation tightens them anyway. Removal is usually done by holding the spindle lock and unscrewing them, with a glove for sharp edges or wire wheels. On occasion they are too tight for this, so that's when I use a wrench. As far as this grinder, it's great! Powerful, small, and has a paddle switch. The switch is important to me because those on/off sliders are too difficult to manipulate while wearing gloves, and they're actually dangerous. I would hate to get a wire wheel tangled up in my clothes and fight frantically to shut it off. The safety lock works okay so far, and serves a purpose. My Black and Decker Firestorm grinder has a large paddle switch with no safety, and it sometimes takes off just from setting it down. The switch is too easy to bump at the worse times. *Disclaimer* I paid retail, and don't sell my opinions for trinkets and freebies.

OK the grinder itself looks good. However, one thing that concerns me most is the type 1 guard. The grinder comes with a type 27 guard for center-recessed discs. According to the manual you need to get a type 1 guard for the flat disc (diamond discs and a lot of cutting discs). I eventually find a seller who sells the guard for about $45. Are you kidding me? I bought this whole grinder for less than $100 and know I have to pay $45 for just a guard?? This is insane.
