It works well for scale and iron (rust). I recommend contacting the filter housing manufacturer to check with them. **Q: I am using this filter but just in a few days I see the color turning reddish due to iron filtration. Will this affect the performance ?** A: First, I love these filters and they work very well. Yes they start working immediately and catch a lot of iron and manganese. I change mine every three months or so or after I begin to see iron start to 'show up' in a toilet. Water flow is never impacted but if your iron / manganese content (i am assuming you are on a well) then you need to seek a whole house filter as a solution. **Q: Number of cartridges in box? This is usually sold as a pack of two cartridges for the price they have posted.** A: This should be a package of 2 of the AP420 cartridges. **Q: how does ap420 filter out the scale** A: Honestly, I have no idea how it works, but I have been using it for more than 5 years and the flecks of scale are clearly visible on the outside of the filter after several months of use, or sometimes sooner. We had major problems with our hot water heater and plumbing fixtures due to scale, and this filter seems to have solved the problem.
