.com This unusually taut thriller features James Garner playing against type as John Potter, a humorless FBI agent negotiating with an escaped convict, who, along with two cronies, has kidnapped a school bus full of deaf students and their teacher (Marlee Matlin). Stashed in an abandoned slaughterhouse, which is as much a character as the people in this HBO movie, the convicts and their prisoners sweat out Potter's refusal to give in to demands, despite the fact that he lost hostages--and the public's faith--his last time around. Garner gives his usual sterling performance, Kim Coates is an evil surprise as the ringleader of the convicts, and Matlin is fine, but underused, in a wordless performance. Lolita Davidovich comes in late in the game to tie up the loose ends and give the ending its punch. Director Daniel Petrie Jr. sets up the action during opening credits, an efficiency mirrored throughout the movie and capped off by an unexpected, but not out-of-the-blue ending. Donald Stewart (Missing) based his tightly written screenplay on Jeffrey Deaver's novel A Maiden's Grave. --Kimberly Heinrichs

Good One
Another good one for James Garner. There were a few minor moments that bugged me as far as plot points that didn't make sense, but overall it was a good story and enjoyable watch.

James Garner type
This is an interesting movie, and keeps a person glued to the movie. The story line is really stright, but the twists and turnes in the action keep a person interested.

Dead Silence
This movie came earlier than the estimated date. It was in mint condition. It was brand new, exactly what the picture looked like in the picture. It was exactly what it said it would be and just what I ordered.

Don't bother; read the book on which it's based
I purchased this DVD because I'd read Jeffrey Deaver's gripping book on which it's based - A Maiden's Grave - four times. It was intelligent, subtly witty, and the main characters were unique people about whom I came to care very much (in the case of the criminals, I was surprised and guiltily gleeful upon learning their fate). In fact, one of the pleasures of A Maiden's Grave was the deluge of surprises and the insights into the workings of hostage situations. In the DVD, virtually everything about the story changed, including the title. The situations and character descriptions that made the book a fascinating page-turner were missing. The actors seemed to have little interest in making this a stimulating story (screenplay or direction challenged, perhaps? These are excellent actors). Sad, because they had one hell of a story to tell. My suggestion is to forgo this sad attempt and buy the book.

For Deaver Fans
If you're a Jeffery Deaver fan you will not be disappointed in this interpretation of 'A Maiden's Grave'.The script is tight and well focused and the characters are well drawn and faithful to the book.Thrre escaped convicts hijack a bus of deaf school children and their teacher and hold them hostage. The interplay between the main negatiator ( played brilliantly by James Garner) and the hostage takers stretches the nerves as the tension builds in this straight talking movie. There is an extra twist at the end. Good value for money.Well done.

Film version of the book 'A Maiden's Grave'.
The movies is a fair representation of the Book 'A Maiden's Grave'. It would have even better if more time had been devoted to the condition of the children. But, an excellent movie.
