I really LOVE the Roomba 505 and docking waste station, you probably will too
We have a very large house, 60/40 tile and carpet. Needed something for routine cleaning. Didn’t think the Roomba 505 would even be able to map the house. To our surprise it did it very quickly. Be sure to open all doors and clear as much of the floor of obstacles as possible for the best mapping. The mopping system works really well (I know lots of Chinese models have had similar features for awhile), but I didn’t want to deal with those companies and waited for iRobot to create a model with these features. The 505 does a great job on tile; with first use it filled the out-water tank with blacken water after double pass mopping over what looked like a generally clean tile floor. Couldn’t have been happier. I have returned to update this review to express how happy we are with its tile mopping. Its impressive how much dirt it picks up on a routine basis. I also have deep cleaned the mop pads in my Samsung drawer washer with great results. The dirty tank gets some grime built up in it, but its easy to clean. The vacuum works pretty well, I understand the double brush vacuums do better, but for general use it picks up the stuff I see typically around the house. I use a Mikita duster to blow out the Roomba's dust bin and filter after a couple of weeks, quick and easy. Keep your station maintained and the whole product should perform well. Its easy to do. The iRobot Home app on my iPhone/iPad still needs improvements. It just got its first update today. My house layout is larger than the software developers probably anticipated. It hard to pick rooms by label, without having to zoom in, as the labels overlap on screen during the room selection process. Note: the map can be zoomed in when doing this once you touch some part of the floor plan first. Sadly, there is no simple list view. Setting up different zones, or correcting missed mapping areas is challenging and cumbersome. iRobot needs to continue focusing on UI and usability improvements to this app. It may frustrate some, and lessen the enthusiasm for Roomba and the dock. NOTE: A great feature would be to direct the Roomba to a mis-mapped area, or changed environment and just have it scan and update that part of the map. Especially so for large houses like mine. We have patterned tile floors and Roomba overcleans some areas "thinking" its some stain or mess. Would be nice to be able to mark these questionable areas as "normal". If you interrupt the cleaning with the app or the battery is low on the Roomba, sometimes the Roomba is left in an odd state. For instance, it won't clean the mop when you expect it should. You can manually force the cleaning routines, but only when a minimum level of battery power is available. Just a few things the app has overlooked and hopefully will eventually be addressed. The user experience and quality robotic system is what will make a "premium" product for iRobot. The mechanical units (Roomba and waste dock work well). The water tanks could be twice the size for my house… but most likely designed for a typically sized house. I am surely planning to keep the Roomba 505, as I expect improvements to the app as iRobot gets more feedback on this newly designed combo vac/mop. There are already articles describing and even better (yet more expensive) 705 combo model on the way. If its better than the 505... it most likely will be worth the extra money. Very happy with this purchase after a few weeks of serious use. Will update if that feeling changes. Summary, I recommend this product at its new price point. A few more weeks have passed, the iPhone app as been updated twice. The app could have a few more nice features added, but it works. We have tile floors that have random patterns, there are a few spots the Roomba mistakes as spills and works very hard to clean them up. This is understandable, and wastes time with extra unnecessary trips back to the dock to clean pads. The app needs a feature to mark and ignore these situations. The Roomba itself has been doing a great job. Its been awhile now and the Roomba is used every day for general cleaning. I works very well, with proper care and feeding. I am impressed the tile floors that typically look clean still manage to brown the empty tank with dirt, kudos Roomba. Do pay attention to the removal and cleaning of the water filter in the bottom to the docking station. I didn't realize it was a plastic removal filter that needed periodic cleaning. Be sure to watch some online videos for the care and cleaning of the robot and docking station. There weren't any real instructions for doing most of this sorta stuff in the box. I do machine was the mop pads (in a Samsung drawer washer) and rinse out the dust filters to extend their use. Don't use any fabric softener with the microfiber pads. Try not to over dry the pads in the dryer, best to exchange pads and let them dry normally. Be careful of the slim clear plastic door in Roomba's dust bin, easy to wash out without noticing. I still really find this Roomba extremely useful and continue to recommend it to those that will take time to use and maintain it properly. The iOS apps gets updates, it still needs a few features to make it of "high quality", but for now its useable enough. Lastly, cleaning the "beater brush" would be far easier if the ends slide out and would allow the tangled hair on the ends to be just easily pulled out. Seems like such a simple and obvious solution, it is a pain to have to pull apart and remove the bound hairs when doing general maintenance. This is something iRobot could fix and improve the user experience a great deal since this is a user serviceable part that needs replacing periodically. I suppose this is my biggest complaint. But, far from a deal breaker. More of a WTF, why didn't you just let the ends of the roller brush pull out just make plucking the hair out super easy? For now my wife just makes me do it, actually I do all of it. :-)

Perfect for rooms completely free of furniture and pets...
#1. Owner manual does not exists for this model, not on iRombo site, not in application. All what they offered there is copies of the manuals for older models with the changed name, not the content! #2. Too many iRobot applications on the Google app store, it will take time for you to figure out which one is for you, because barcode on the machine and boxes downloading different apps and neither of those are working. #3. I downloaded an app that allowed me to connect to the robot and map out the apartment. However, I am not sure if it is the right app, as the list of supported models does not include the 505X model I am using it with! #4. When the robot operates in simultaneous vaccum and mop cleaning mode, the rotating cleaning pads leave a noticeable uncleaned strip between them—especially when the robot is moving along a wall. #5. Already run robot for one run over my apartment. It eats water like an alligator. Water tank filled to MAX mark gone before apartment was even finished, I had to refill water tank! I managed to find working version of application (I hope it is correct one) because it allows me to create map of the apartment and even schedule next automated run for a week with different level of cleaning. Tomorrow it will be first test for "automation" as iRobot sees it. Will update my review tomorrow or couple days later. 10/08/2026 Updated 10/09/2026 First automated run. Apartment has full size of 857 sq. ft. Robot managed to "clean" 1100 sq. ft! Never mind that according to the map only half of the apartment actually were clened! The robot's body has too large a diameter. The space beneath standard kitchen chairs remained uncleaned because the robot couldn't fit between the chair legs. I ran the robot again in manual cleaning of the kithen to understand why this was happening and saw it with my own eyes. On top of that if it "feel" presence of my cat, it create wide circle around him. But machine noize bothered cat, he moves and here is another blind spot and so on and on. And robot just marked those spots and avoiding them on the second run, even when cat not there. Update 10/11/2026 Today I started up a new automation program. I decided to see how the robot performs as a simple vacuum, without the wet cleaning function. To my surprise, the robot stops about a foot short of any obstacle, turns 90 degrees, and then proceeds parallel to it—say, a wall—maintaining that same distance. This means a strip about a foot wide along the walls remains uncleaned! It does the exact same thing around any obstacles like table legs in the living room, too. Updare 10/12/2026 Less than a week into using it (the robot ran 1-2 times a day, plus a couple of extra single-room cleaning cycles in various modes), the battery charging time became — to put it mildly — unacceptable. In the middle of the a cleaning run (it had cleaned 3 out of the 4 scheduled rooms), robot returned to the base to recharge. After more than six hours on the dock, the charge level had risen from just 10% to barely 60%! Today, after over 274 minutes AUTOMATED scheduled operation, the robot managed to clean 539 square feet of the apartment—with all the chairs lifted onto tables and no obstacles on the floor; I even put the cat in a carriing cage! See the screenshot from application with time and sq. footage statistics. And last video of how actually this robot works, how loud and not cleaning it is. Automated task for cleaning 4 rooms. Toal size litle over 850 sq. ft. Started at 9:00 AM/ Time when that video were taken 4:16 PM and task was not completed because 1 room robot not even visited yet! Over 7 hours later, without basically any obstacles on the floors of all 4 rooms! Straight hardwood floor. This robot will go back to the seller now for sure!

Excellent robot at an excellent price
This is my first floor-cleaning robot, and I purchased it in early June. We live in an 1,800-square-foot rental house with laminate floors. My wife and I don’t create a lot of mess, but we live in Arizona, where dirt and sand are constantly blowing around and getting tracked inside. Before buying the 505X, I watched a lot of YouTube comparison reviews, many of which trashed this robot. My reaction was simple: our real-world use case just isn’t as dramatic as the torture tests shown in many of those reviews. More importantly, I think they often overlook one huge factor: longevity. Plenty of newer companies make impressive robots that perform great when they’re new, but how well will they work two or three years from now? iRobot has been around longer than most competitors and has built a solid reputation. That mattered more to me than which robot won a controlled YouTube test by a few percentage points. In everyday use, the 505X has been excellent for us. We cook a lot, and by the end of a weekend day, the kitchen floor can get surprisingly dirty with crumbs, spills, and tracked spots. The 505X usually takes about 10 minutes to clean it, and I run it there two or three times a week. I also regularly clean our laundry room and dining room. Both are high-traffic areas connected to outside entrances, and since using the Roomba routinely, we’ve noticed a lot less dirt being tracked throughout the house. When we first moved into this rental, the floors were pretty dirty. I ran Smart Clean, and the first whole-house cleaning took roughly twice as long as our current cleaning every 10 days. The dirty-water tank afterward was impressively disgusting—which was exactly what I wanted to see. It’s also great for cleaning under beds, those classic “out of sight, out of mind” areas that normally get neglected. The 505X did an excellent job mapping our house around numerous obstacles and handles changes well when objects are added, moved, or removed. Would I use it as my primary vacuum on wall-to-wall carpet? Probably not. I don’t expect a small battery-powered robot to compete with the deep cleaning of my high-powered Shark upright. But for a mostly or entirely hard-floor home, the 505X has been a terrific fit. It keeps the dirtiest areas consistently clean, reduces tracked-in dirt, reaches places we normally neglect, and does it with very little effort from us. For our use case, that’s exactly what I wanted.

Quiet Cleaning Monster with Terrible Battery Life
I got this after using two older Roomvas for years. My older two were different generations but functioned basically the same. Similar noise, similar battery, similar cleaning ability, etc. this one is vastly different. The first thing I noticed was how quiet it is. The noise from the older ones was my family's biggest complaint. This thing is noticeably quieter, and apparently has way more suction power. I love the mapping ability this has that my old ones didn't do. I had to use those little virtual walls or keep doors closed to keep it out of certain rooms. I just tell this one not to go there and it doesn't. Now for the negative - battery life. I suppose it makes sense that the battery may not be as good since this one also mops, but I wouldn't expect it to be this bad. Don't expect to turn it on and quickly clean your house in an hour or two. So far my experience is that it will clean anywhere from 10-30 minutes then go clean the mop pads, go clean again, then go charge for 1:45-2 hours before continuing to clean again! I even have the pad cleaning distance set to the max. So that's about twice as much time charging than cleaning. In theory, this should be fine. It just does it's thing and you ignore it, so I guess it doesn't matter. Since it's so quiet, I don't think anybody will care that it runs off and on all day, but it's still a stark difference from the 2hrs without a recharge it took for my old ones to complete the job. I've included pics of the cleaning timeline to give you an idea of it's behavior beyond my description. So far I've had it running for about 14 hours in the deep Clean setting, which does a criss-cross pattern everywhere, and it's only about halfway done. I won't do deep clean every time. I did have my old ones set to sweep every room twice, but I don't think that's feasible with this one or it won't be able to fully clean my house within 24 hours. I certainly don't think I can set it to run only during the hours we're at work and it complete the whole house in that time. I'll also add that I've refilled the water tank once already also. It wasn't quite empty, but was over 3/4 empty. So it's a quiet robot that cleans really well and does great at getting everywhere it needs to and staying away from where you don't want it, but the battery and runtime is quite disappointing. I'll give an update after I've lived with it for a few days of it running it's normal or "smart" cleaning runs.

Not worth its price
It's cool, but not worth a fraction of its price tag. Gimmicky at best. Try another brand. This thing has been a pain since day one. The first day, I had to completely disassemble it and remove and replace the battery just to get it to initialize, due to an internal failure. I've had it for a couple months and never ended up loving it. The vacuum function tends to fling debris around hard floors instead of sucking it up. Even on max suction, it misses stuff. The mop function leaves the floor very spotty, especially near the base. It does so with or without detergent. It uses about 6x the amount of water as my Bissell steam mop. A gallon of distilled water mops about 3000 square feet. If I move the couch and tell it to spot vacuum that area, it just wanders away until eventually saying it's lost. It likes to try to return to dock and then just drive over the ramp and get itself stuck. I'm giving it an extra star to compensate for any possible future updates and added usability in the app, which also kinda sucks. I would not recommend spending more than $150-200 on this

Convenient when it works, but far from set-it-and-forget-it
I bought this Roomba mainly because I wanted something that could vacuum, mop, empty itself, and handle routine cleaning without me having to be involved every time. It does get fairly close to that, but after using it for a while, I have found that it still requires much more maintenance and supervision than I expected from a vacuum in this price range. My biggest issue is the dustbin, especially with pet hair. Hair can get stuck inside instead of emptying properly into the base, which then affects how well the vacuum continues cleaning. The small flap around the dustbin opening is also very easy to displace while clearing out trapped hair. If that happens and the flap stays open, crumbs and cat litter can fall back out when the Roomba bumps over something. I have seen it pick up litter and then leave some of it back on the floor after trying to climb over the metal supports on my bar stools. Vacuuming and mopping at the same time can make the pet-hair problem worse because the hair can get damp and clog the bin. The filter also needs cleaning more often than the app seems to suggest, particularly in a home with pets, litter, and dust. So while the self-emptying feature is convenient, this is definitely not something I can simply forget about for weeks at a time. I still have to check the dustbin, filter, and base regularly to make sure everything actually emptied and nothing is clogged. The navigation is a mixed experience. It does a good job avoiding ordinary obstacles such as pet toys, furniture, and random objects on the floor. However, the map itself has not always been accurate. Mine created an entire nonexistent room where a regular wall closet is and even decided there was a bed inside it. I was able to work around that by marking the area as a no-clean zone, but the app still keeps suggesting that I clean this imaginary room. I also really miss having simple manual control. You can create zones and use spot cleaning, but I cannot just easily direct the vacuum to a specific place the way I could with an old robot vacuum that had a remote control. Cleaning close to the dock is another weak point because there is an area around the base that does not get cleaned particularly well. The app can also be frustrating. On one cleaning session, the Roomba reported that it was stuck even though there was no obvious obstacle. I happened to be home, but it still took several attempts to restart and reconnect everything, and the cleaning routine was never completed. If I had not been home, it simply would have stopped there. There are definitely things I like. The self-emptying base is convenient when it works properly, the object avoidance is useful, and being able to schedule vacuuming and mopping without being home is a major improvement over doing everything manually. But at this price level, I expected the experience to be more reliable and require less intervention. It saves me cleaning time, but it has not eliminated nearly as much maintenance as I expected.

Smart & Incredible Little Machine
Incredible little machine! I bought this unit to replace my very old, yet effective, Roomba. My old Roomba didn’t have mapping technology or a wet mop so I upgraded to the 505X vacuum & mop combo and I am extremely happy with it. It didn’t take long to get my house mapped and once it was completed my little “Cleaner” went to work cleaning. It took a little bit to figure out how to alter the maps to split rooms apart and adjust the individual perimeters, but once I figured it out I would send the unit to each area and adjust the perimeters as needed to ensure all area boundaries were included in the area map. Once completed I was able to set up a regular weekly schedule. I also simply send the Roomba to a specific room/area to vacuum or vacuum & mop when needed, which is a fantastic feature. I opted with using only distilled water in the wash basin to keep it chemical free for warranty purposes as well as to ensure the unit doesn’t acquire residual buildup within the unit from a cleaner or regular tap water. I have my roomba scheduled to vacuum every day and to mop my hardwood floor areas twice a week. I love coming home to neat uniform vacuum lines in the carpet! We have one Labrador Retriever and so far everything looks great regarding dog hair. The auto waste bin “dump” is fabulous! I haven’t reached 30 days yet but I’m sure the home-port waste bin bag will fill a little quicker having a 75 pound lab but that’s perfectly fine with me. My old unit’s battery would die mid-cycle leaving it stranded in random places within the house but not this 505! My upstairs is 2,000 sf and one charge is more than enough to vacuum and mop the entire upstairs. The unit’s technology sends it back to the home base to empty its bin (dry and wet) when needed and resumes its work once empty. I will still use my big vacuum and mop once a week or so while this unit keeps everything tidy and clean between regular carpet & floor upkeep. Is it necessary? Maybe not, but I’m a retired U.S. Marine and some cleaning habits are really hard to kick! What did I do with my old roomba? It found a new home with my oldest son who is a senior in college living in a house with 3 other roommates. I’m sure they’ll be happy not having to vacuum so often! If you are on this fence about buying this unit, go for it, especially if it’s on sale. I bought mine on during the Prime Day sales event. Enjoy!!

Great vacuum combo
I’ve been really impressed with the Roomba Plus 505x Combo + AutoWash dock. It has made keeping my floors clean so much easier, especially in the kitchen, hallway, and living room. I love that it both vacuums and mops in one run, and the rotating mop pads do a great job on dried spills. The mapping system was quick to learn my home layout, and it easily avoids obstacles. One of my favorite features is the AutoWash dock — not having to empty the dustbin or wash the mop pads myself saves a lot of time. It works especially well on hardwood and tile floors. The app is also simple to use for scheduling specific rooms or setting extra cleaning in busy areas. Overall, this has been a huge help for keeping the house consistently clean with very little effort on my part.

Great little machine!
So far, I am in love with this machine. We chose very carefully as different models offer different features and we had a ‘must have’ list and had a budget. This model ticked all the boxes- self emptying/self cleaning mop heads, able to avoid a sock or dog toy, recognize carpets while mopping and has good suction. The app is also very useful for programming schedules or ordering clean up on demand. There is a ‘clean zone’ feature which allows you to target hi traffic areas within a room and a spot clean in the app for spills and quick clean ups which replaced the old spot clean. you can quickly pop it onto the house map and she will come clean up a mess in that square. Having her wash and dry her mops is a great feature as you know the mops aren’t going to sit and get moldy. Learning curves: don’t try to run her at night. She needs light to operate her best. Don’t cancel her job unless you are there to put her away, I assumed she would just go back to her dock but she didn’t and she sat on the floor in the dark with wet dirty mops and ran out of battery. With 4 cleaning options, there is something for every need. Vac, mop, vac & mop and vac THEN mop. The difference between the last two are vac & mop is a time saver for light cleaning. if you have really dirty floors you would choose vacuum first, then mop and she will do a better mop job afterwards. Set up was easy with the app and she did a darn good job mapping out the house. Every time she cleans, she gets more intuitive and today I see on our map a picture of our bed with pillows and a toilet in the bathroom, whereas these were just blank areas when she was first mapping. She is also good about alerting us on the app when she has an issue like a closed door or obstacle so we can correct. Make sure you enable alerts on your app. Set up with SIRI was simple. I have a Dyson V15 with the green light that shows dust and dog hair that I was using daily for the wads of dust and dog hair that falls. I used it after she performed a vac&mop and I was pretty impressed by how much she picked up. It will never be perfect, there is always hair and dust in the air that will fall minutes later, but at least I don’t have to vacuum every day and can save a day for a deep clean with my Dyson and let my robot do the rest. Don’t be surprised if you spend a lot of time watching her on the app at first. She’s amazingly thorough and works a grid to cover every inch of floor. This is our first robot vacuum and I am very impressed with our choice, plus we got it on sale and saved $200 so that was the ‘fit the budget’ that was on our list. Below you can see Auntie Alice vacuuming our kitchen.

I don’t even want to give this one star. It’s not really picking anything up when it vacuums. The mop is ok but not even one month and the mop function won’t work. Just keeps saying problem with the mop.
