I use the medium tint in winter and the medium/deep in summer when I have a tan or when I want to give myself the appearance of a bit of a tan. When in doubt, I would suggest going slightly darker than slightly lighter. Also, give the BB Cream a few minutes to "set" before you judge what it's doing -- it always looks amazing from about 5 minutes after I apply it through the rest of the day, regardless of what I think while I'm applying it.
