Susie Cooper: An Elegant Affair

Description

Inventive and varied, the colourful and highly collectible work of Susie Cooper holds up a mirror to the history of decorative arts this century, from the Art Deco '20s to the present day. Like her contemporary Clarice Cliff, Susie Cooper is now seen as one of the most significant innovators in world ceramics, a status reflected both in the prices paid for her work and in numerous exhibitions. This large-format book, published not long after her death at the age of 93, celebrates a lifetime's work of 70 years, illustrating in colour a selection of ceramics from all periods of her career. "Elegance with utility" was Susie Cooper's perceptive description of her work, a phrase which embraces the entire range of her oeuvre, from the dramatic Art Deco lustreware and the whimsical tableware to the adventurous designs for Wedgwood. Review: An Elegant Addition to my toilet literature - Susie Cooper: an elegant affair is a scintillating insight into the life of the legendary ceramic designer. With an attention to detail in both text and image finding itself a perfect distance from obsequiousness to be considered a true homage to an artist noted for her elegant yet functional, innovative designs. I have been fortunate enough to have the author sign my copy, accompanied by a brief message which itself is a concise reflection of the humble, cordial character of the author. I feel somewhat sad that the dedication invested in this book doesn’t appear to have achieved the level of acclaim that the subject enjoyed, somewhat apparent from the number of withdrawals from it’s former home in a library. To summarise, a fascinating account of the works of an industry leader, remarkably well-penned and accompanied by a plethora of astounding images. A true injustice that this book isn’t in every house in the land. Although that might be because it’s f***ing massive. Review: susie cooper - it was just what i was looking for at a very affordable price, illustrations were perfect and large for my colllege assignment, would definately rate this book very highly
