Together, we watched the DVD. Each girl was given 5 note cards to ask questions anonymously. I collected the cards and we answered them as a group. I know the girls were comforted/surprised that we adults all have the same answers and shared similar fears at their age. I think they were also surprised that the grown women could discuss their periods like they were discussing the weather - which is what we really wanted to impart - That it is natural, normal and nothing to create shame. The DVDs were great and really contributed to the positive atmosphere. Such great information shared; stuff I never would have thought to include myself, yet makes TOTAL sense from the viewpoint of a 10 year old. I had parents thanking me for opening the door for more conversations AND who wanted to order copies for their own family to own. Dr. Chrystal is so gentle and non threatening. I was a little skeptical at first since we already have such an open relationship & I've had my period since middle school so I consider myself an expert in that department however there are so many things that come up that your everyday "period conversation" just doesn't cover. The examples that were used to demonstrate how quickly or slowly your monthly flow is was by far my favorite part. It's so difficult to explain to a prepubescent girl how the flow of your period will actually be. My daughter thought it would be like a water faucet...poor baby. I've had friends ask if they could borrow it or send their daughters over to watch it. Although she was only 8 when we watched it, it was still extremely appropriate and she handled the material quite well. I think it's great that the doctor opted to create the video in somewhat of a talk show format with mothers and daughters. I've recommended it to so many of my friends with daughters approaching this age. It is suggested that you watch it first alone since it is a sensitive subject. I only watched part of it first.This video addresses the topic in no other way I've seen in the past.
