I don’t recommend! Review: The Devils is a strange book in that it's very much Abercrombie and simultaneously isn't! It's got a lot more (hilarious) humour in it than his other books, but still retains that sharp dialogue and visceral violence we all love from Joe. A wonderfully original tale of a reluctant priest that is given the task, by a ten year old female pope no less, or escorting a gutter rat girl to Troy to be crowned empress, with a werewolf, necromancer, invisible elf, a woman that never sticks her neck out, vampire and immortal templar knight as protection. As ridiculous as this seems, the story becomes worryingly believable and you very quickly become invested in all of the characters, and swiftly start rooting for them as they encounter various setbacks on their journey. There is more than a little irony and satire directed at Religion and The Church, but not in an offensive way - more in a way that is put across in such a manner that it is impossible to disagree with, which is very clever and bold - not to mention hilarious in many examples. Surprisingly deep and evocative in places, the book is a real page turner and I devoured it in a few days and loved it. I have been a huge fan of Abercrombie since The First Law Trilogy and although this is a detraction from his previous work, and categorically not in a bad way, it is still undeniably his work and shows his adaptability and wonderful imagination can come up with new and fresh ideas with existing tropes to entertain and enthral his readers, even without the mention of dumplings. An excellent novel - different from his other work, but equally as entertaining and enjoyable - dive right in, you won't be disappointed whether this is your first book by the author, or you are a big fan of his existing back catalogue. The more I ponder on it having completed it, the more clever it gets.
