The cartridge comes away from the projectile with the cartridge spitting itself out of the side. Whilst the plastic is very plasticly if you know what I mean, it is hard hearing and has taken some abuse from my two boys. Its a bit of a fiddle to load the magazines but that's cause its more realistic than any other toys we have come across.
