However, it is updated and exciting for fresh blood. There's a lot to like, some to dislike, and somethings to scratch your head at.What I like:While it wouldn't be wise for anyone to take vengeance on someone, I think Bruce Willis's role really fills that niche of the common man (or woman) who is watching daily news forecasts of crime and drugs and feels obligated to do something more about it than simply vote once a year.Next, the movie also points out what many average citizens already believe; that there is too much crime and police aren't always going to be able to solve them. Also begs the question, what does someone do to protect themselves if law enforcement is always 10+ minutes away.Lastly, it was nice to point out a very common failure many firearm owners have when using a semi-automatic pistol for the very time without proper training. Specifically, I am referring to when the slide came back and cut Bruce Willis's hand because he was not holding the firearm properly.The bad:First off, anyone thinking this is a pro-gun film is clearly mistaken. Yes, there is a clear underlying point that if you need to protect your family, a gun is a smart choice. However, the film makes a mockery of what many firearms retail stores are really like. Furthermore, while it was a nice touch to the final battle, many people who lack a familiar knowledge of firearms are not going to realize that Bruce Willis's final gun was, in fact, a fully automatic firearm that is illegal in every state for the average citizen to own. The AR 15 style rifle sold throughout the United States and owned by 10+ million Americans are actually semi-automatic and shoot no faster than you can pull the trigger.What am I scratching my head over:I think if you are just watching a film for entertainment purposes then this film is awesome. However, if you are heavily left or right wing leaning, or maybe just someone who loves the classics, then this film is probably going to irritate you. Why you may ask:1. Showed firearm retailers as a bunch of overzealous firearm loving baffoons, which is a little irritating. Plus, retail girls like that are predominately found in the firearm magazine pictures (or x-rated films) and not a retail store.2. Bruce Willis managed to walk out of his house just about every night and see a crime happening. Now, I get that it probably wouldn't be hard to find a corner in America where drugs are sold almost constantly, but an attempted rape, theft, vehicle theft; just how much bad luck could you have in a city to just walk out every night and see this stuff happening. I mean, everybody would be armed (or leaving) if it were that bad.3. People cannot own fully automatic weapons without some very serious and probably expensive permits and, these days, long drawn out back ground checks.4. Why I'm disappointed... To the reviewer named "cinest", I'd say this: (1) Grow up. LOTS of folks, like myself, get REAL tired of reading how reviewers like this fellow, end up thinking that films like this should be based 100% on "reality". It's a friggin' movie, ok? It's NOT based on reality, ok? Sure, when Bruce Willis's character at the end, ends up with a select-fire (full-auto) AND SUPPRESSED AR-15, I'm quite sure ANYONE with half a brain realizes that a rabidly-anti-gun city like Chicago, located within a rabidly-anti-gun state like Illinois, is not going to sell a full-auto sub-gun WITH a built-in suppressor to a civilian, even someone as accomplished as a surgeon. For all of you who "just don't get it", you've missed the point(s) here entirely. The purpose of movies like this are two-fold: (1) They're "entertainment", ok? I'll say it again: movies like this are NOT AND NEVER WILL BE "BASED ON REALITY", OK...?? They're made to entertain us, ok? Nothing more. If you don't like the violence, don't watch it. A number of "reviewers" said they liked the original Death Wish film with Charles Bronson more. Fine. But has anybody noticed, or commented on the fact that even back then when that original Death Wish film was made, that most of the "bad guys" portrayed in that movie were black? What? No "racist" comments there? Gee, I'm shocked. In the latest incantation of this genre' of films, there was maybe one or two who were black. The "Ice Cream man" was one. All the rest were white, or of some other extract. (2), Movies like this are also made for their appeal. Do you guys & gals who rated this movie with "1 star", actually think that those of us who like movies like this really "think about acting out these things" - for real..?? I was brought up around guns. Most of the people in my family were gun owners & shooters, but not a single one of us would've EVER thought to do what was depicted in this movie, beyond using a gun for legitimate, life-saving self defense of ourselves, or others. The bottom line here..?? Movies like this quietly "allow" us to go "mad" - even if it's only for 90 minutes or so, before we're forced to "return to reality" when the show's over. I'll say it one last time, "1-star reviewers"... This movie was made to "entertain", ok? Nothing more. And I thought it did that quite well...!
