A silicon gasket is used to seal the joint between the glass and the steel base. It appears that the same type of silicone gasket is used to seal the glass rim to the stainless steel collar at the top of the unit. As long as the unit was designed and assembled properly, the existence of the silicone gasket is not a concern to me, because silicone gaskets and O-rings have a service temperature range of negative 100 degrees Fahrenheit to positive 400 degrees Fahrenheit. I did notice, however, that the stainless steel collar has surface rust on the inside of the lip, around the rim. Most, but not all, of the rust can be wiped off with a paper towel. I have to decide if I want to live with a small amount of surface rust, which does not affect functioning and which is not visible from the outside of the unit, or if I want to spend time and money researching and testing rust removers. **Q: I'm reading mixed reviews on how quickly this kettle boils water. How long does it take your kettle to heat up 1.5L of water?** A: This is about the 7th electric kettle that I have owned over 30+ years. I love it. It takes the same time to boil as all the others I've had. I have never timed it, but it is much quicker than boiling water on the stove, and my stove is gas. Being able to view the water inside the glass makes me feel it looks fresher, and the blue lights that glow while it is heating water is comforting. I have owned kettles that cost a lot more than this one, but I believe this one is my favorite. It's neat being able to watch the water boil through the glass, and the blue LED indicators are a nice touch. It gives it a friendly, futuristic feel. It boils nice and quickly, too.The only con, and this is minor, is that the black Ovente logo smudges and smears if you touch it or wipe it down while the unit is still warm. It makes for an ugly spot on what is otherwise an attractive piece.Also note: The "max" line is for real. If you fill it even a little bit beyond that line, it will spill onto the counter when it boils.UPDATE: After a few months of ownership and daily use, I have another "con" I need to list; once it has boiled once, it will not turn on again for several minutes, presumably because its thermostat thinks it is still at boiling temperature. I find this unfortunate, and my previous kettles with automatic shut-offs did not exhibit this behavior.Use case: When I want to make a pitcher of hot tea, my tea pitcher is a half gallon. This thing only holds 1.5L, which is just over 3 quarts. With previous electric kettles, I used to be able to boil a full pot, start the tea steeping, and then quickly boil another quart to top it off while the infusion was still taking place. With this new kettle, that is no longer possible, as it takes several minutes for the kettle to become usable a second time, and by then it is too late.While disappointing, this use case failure is not going to be a deal-breaker for everyone. One wonders, though, why this thermostat detects so much residual heat after a boil, even after cold water has been poured in, so as to prevent consecutive boils. Perhaps they could get the design team to correct this in future revisions.UPDATE 2:This just died today, 12/20/2016. It was purchased in April 2015. So it only lasted a disappointing ~20 months of daily use.I guess the next pertinent question is, "Knowing this, would you lease an electric kettle for ~$10 per year?".I suppose I would, but, really there is no excuse for these things not lasting longer.
