You go to Ridley Scott, of course, spectacle maker and pictorialist par excellence. So Prometheus is bound to be eye filling, with fully wrought planetary vistas and occasionally jaw-dropping visual coups. And did we use the word alien back there? Yes, folks, Prometheus is a prequel, in a sideways sort of fashion, to Scott's 1979 Alien original--or at least it's a long-distant stage setter for that story. This one begins with a space mission that could reveal the extraterrestrial roots of Earth, although what's buried out on the planet turns out to be much more complicated than expected. In the midst of suspenseful episodes (and a few contrived plot turns), Prometheus reaches for Big Answers to Big Questions, in a grand old sci-fi tradition. This lends the movie a hint of metaphysical energy, even if Scott's reach extends well, well beyond his grasp. The hokier moments are carried off with brio by Michael Fassbender (the robot on board), Charlize Theron, and Idris Elba, and then you've got Noomi Rapace entering the badass hall of fame for a long, oh-no-they-didn't sequence involving radical surgery, which might just induce the vapours in a few viewers. It's a new film in the Alien universe with a separate storyline. I was disappointed it did not show a back story to Alien 1979 but also pleased that Ridley produced a sci-fi masterclass. A simple script that barely juggled big topics but it was good enough for a theatrical release. I suspect Fox had a hand with it being different from Alien, but Ridley in conferences held for Prometheus did say it is not a Prequel. That said a lot of ignorant Alien fans continued to dream stubbornly for a Alien prequel and got a big shock on June first 2012. I was shocked but ultimately pleased. i long to see it again on the big screen but time is flying. I hope the blu-ray will contain extra conetnt with a bit of more gore, action and interesting dialogue cut out for commercial or for the theatrical release. i will buy the dvd first because i suspect more content is being rallied by Scott for all our viewing necessities. There are references to BLADE RUNNER inside the Weyland files. Weyland speaks of a man who implanted memories into the brains of his androids and they killed him for this silly act. another thing i find worrying is that i need a tablet or some kind of "Ipad" to watch the other special features via wi-fi connected to my blu-ray. i found that annoying. do i need to buy this contraption to enjoy the film? that is why i like Universal blu-rays for their picture in picture features all in one screen connected to my PC! i still stand by my ground and say it is not a prequel. it is a different take which concentrates on the bigger picture which was missed in the 80s - who are the space jockies? the sequel is gonna be about a planet called Paradise. maybe the sequel to the sequel will be HELL/HADES: XENOMORPH HOME WORLD and we might get to see Predators hunting everything and marines with steroid pumped muscles and trigger happy fingers and smart mouthed grunts and the usual actress with the Ripleyesque role. We know what to expect now. let's just enjoy a good sci-fi flick Review: Excellent Package - This is a review of the whole package but I will touch upon the film as well. I bought the 3D bluray pack that come with the 2D version of the film and a whole load of extras. 1st: The 3d looks pretty stunning, having watched it through on a 42" TV set the picture looked good, there was some slight fuzziness of some of the opening credits but as a whole it looked very good. The menus have been rendered into 3D and it gives a very cohesive look. 2nd 2D blu ray worked well and had some nice special features. I have not listened to any of the commentaries (you'll forgive me that when I talk about the extras), but I have tested out the feature where you sync your ipad to the film by downloading an app. The film plays and pauses to allow you to watch so,e items appear on the ipad that relate to the scenes you are watching. It works well, was easy to set up and has a lot of useful information. 3rd: The extras are a mammoth undertaking. The main extras feature clocks in at 3.5 hours, you can also set it up to divert to about 26 mini features lasting 1-5 minutes that give you further insight into the making. The main feature is long but covers from initial idea, through scripting and design to the filming and release of the movie. It is very informative and often does not hold back. There are times when you can hear the disappointment as the crew talk about things that maybe did not work or were abandoned. It discusses what the film might have been like had it stayed as a true prequel to Alien. Well worth watching and certainly provides much needed insight into the making of Prometheus. The film itself is a solid sci-fi affair. Fans of sci-fi will recognise some of the situations and fans of the Alien franchise will be familiar with the set up. What I enjoyed was that it didn't feel like it tried to recreate the other Alien films too much. There were nods to it (sometimes very big nods) but that is to be expected in a film set in the same universe. There are plot holes, some of those explained a little in the deleted scenes, which if left in would have given some context to character decisions. There will be even one moment where you might shout at your screen, 'run to the side you silly person' I personally enjoyed the film, however I went not quite knowing what I would expect having read the blurb about it NOT being a prequel to Alien. I know the film has divided opinion, but certainly I think that may be down to high expectations. However, if you are looking to be entertained then this film does that. Watch it in 3D, then watch the feature length extras and you will certainly feel that you bout a quality product and got your money's worth. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Welcome return of Ridley Scott to grown-up sci-fi *by M***Y on 21 October 2012* Watching Scott's re-entry into the world of Alien [Blu-ray] [1979 ] reminds you that there just aren't enough filmmakers around who really believably create philosophically interesting movies, in painstakingly created universes, designed to both entertain and make you think. It's a treat to see him back in the genre. Here, his original Alien movie has been used as a kick off point only. Although, as he puts it, the `DNA' of that movie can be found here, this is not a direct prequel. It simply happens in the same world, and has some fanboy satisfying nods to the original. Here, the tone is markedly different, setting out a larger question on a more epic scale... how were we created? If life can be created in a lab, who then is the god? We start briefly on Earth, where a couple of scientists have found common themes in petroglyphs around the globe, persuading them that these are a map, an invitation if you will, to come visit. And so this movie is that deep space expedition, now funded by Weyland Corporation represented by the icy cool Charlize Theron. Of course, things don't work out for the scientific expedition quite as expected once they arrive. Soon vials of black goo are infecting the crewmembers and creatures start to appear in which the sharp eyed will see links back to Giger's original designs. Don't go expecting the same claustrophobia of the original however. Here the canvas is much more open, with sweeping vistas and grand set pieces. Scott's eye for design is as evident as ever, and the effects uniformly satisfying, not least due to his penchant for creating real sets and props as much as possible, limiting the uses of cgi to areas you might not even realise. Ultimately though, the movie is most satisfying in its almost arthouse beauty and grandeur in the first half. As it lurches into elements of action and horror, the tension is never as vivid and the action beats never as shocking as you might expect. Crucially, some plot elements are just a little fuzzy, and it takes the captain of the vessel to walk in to one scene and in a few sentences of exposition suddenly explain out of the blue what is happening, for things to start to come together. The nagging questions at the end are mostly deliberate creation of mystery, but there are a few things that are not obvious that perhaps should be, and so the end is not wholly satisfying. The 3D is actually probably the most satisfying since Avatar, in that it is never obtrusive or distracting, and the extras, ranging from the multiple commentaries, 3 hour 40 minute documentary (in modular format to let you jump in and out as you wish) and myriad of other materials including about 40 minutes of deleted and extended scenes, make for a terrific package. Certainly watching the documentary was gripping and exhaustively illuminating in its discussion on how the details of the design came together, and the deleted scenes help illustrate some of the ideas that were left on the shelf.. and its nice to find the scene that was intended as a precursor to that scene of the Captain's exposition, to understand it was not always intended to be so out of the blue. All in all, this is a great package, of a fascinating, though not perfect movie. Even where it doesn't work completely, the ambition and vision is laudable.
