The laptop still powered on, but the bios setup was locked, so I wanted to make a verified dump of the SPI flash and reprogram it with the correct official bios image. My chip was a Macronix MX25L12873F, which 1 did not see specifically listed on the included 25-series support chart, but the programmer still worked correctly with it. The chip was detected through flashrom under the compatible Macronix profile, and I was able to read the full 16mb bios image, make multiple matching dumps, write the replacement image, and verify it successfully. The SOIC& clip also worked well enough once I had it aligned correctly. As with all bios/SPI work, the connection has to be solid. I had the laptop fully disconnected from AC power, main battery, and CMOS battery before attaching the clip. After reading the chip multiple times and confirming matching hashes, I flashed the official MSI bios image and the laptop booted successfully afterward with access restored A few notes for anyone buying this for bios repair: Make sure your chip voltage is correct before connecting anything. My chip was a 3.3 V SPI flash chip, not 1.8 V. Also, do not skip the backup step (trust me). Read the chip more than once and verify that the dumps match before writing anything.
