The cleverly written series follows five first-year interns and their supervisors at Seattle Grace Hospital as they train to become the future generation of surgeons. We witness them juggling their careers with love dilemmas, family issues and relationships. Ellen Pompeo (Catch Me If You Can, Old School) stars as Meredith Grey, the daughter of a renowned surgeon and former employee at the hospital, as she struggles to fulfil her own ambitions in her mothers formidable shadow. Along with her fellow interns, Izzie Stevens (Katherine Heigle), George O'Malley (T.R Knight), Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) and the feisty Cristina Yang, played by the Award Winning Sandra Oh, she is thrown into hospital life at the deep end. She must all deal with life and death situations whilst trying to maintain a grip on her personal life. The intense drama of day-to-day life in the hospital is matched with intelligent dialogue, sexy antics and plenty of giggles. With relationships and personal dramas adding to the pressure of becoming successful doctors, Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson), a senior doctor nicknamed "The Nazi" is on hand to whip the interns into shape. Working along-side her is the flirtatious and talented Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), an established doctor whose attraction to Meredith makes working life complicated for them both. Just when you wanted to say "Oh no, not another hospital drama," Grey's Anatomy turns into one of the most addicting series on television. With no big stars and no hype, the ABC series debuted last spring as a mid-season replacement and became a bonafide smash in its nine-episode season. The series, a hybrid of House 's medical detectives and Dawson's Creek 's hormones and catchy pop-rock soundtrack, follows five competitive surgical interns at the fictional Seattle Grace Hospital. There's optimistic ex-model Izzie (Katherine Heigl), bumbling do-gooder George (T.R. Knight), competitive glacier Cristina (Sandra Oh), cocky womanizer Alex (Justin Chambers), and the show's namesake, Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo), whose medical career is complicated by her famous surgeon mother who now lives with Alzheimer's, and her frowned-upon relationship with another surgeon, Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey, enjoying the best career revival since Rob Lowe). The doctors juggle romance and foster friendships while trying not to stab each other in the back over surgeries. Grey's Anatomy 's first season, while entertaining, went a little far trying to find its groove, overdosing on Meredith's overly simplistic voice-overs ("At the end of the day... faith is a funny thing"), and musical montages. It has the usual trappings of a hospital drama (unusual cases, such as the patient with the 70-pound tumor, and trysts in the on-call room), but with more warm fuzzies and light touches. Pompeo, who can sound just like Renee Zellweger if you close your eyes, is likeable but not strong enough of a presence compared to her co-stars. Luckily the quirky dialogue and stellar acting by the ethnically diverse cast, particularly by Chandra Wilson (Dr. Bailey, aka "the Nazi") and Oh, who won a Golden Globe for best supporting actress, more than make up for it. -- Ellen A. Collectors Edition? Seriously?
I love this series! Not my usual viewing but thoroughly enjoyable. We start off knowing very little about all of the characters but we quickly learn that our lead Meredith Grey (Intern) is the daughter of a world renowned surgeon with big shoes to fill. Christina Yang(Intern) is a highly driven and super-competitive ego-maniac. Alex Karev (Intern) (likeable despite acting like an ass for much of the time) is a state school success story who went to college on a wrestling scholarship and succeeded against all odds. Izzie Stevens (Intern) (extremely unlikeable in my opinion) is a former model who used this to pay her way through med school night courses, written as a "white-trash girl who came from nothing and has a profound emotional connection with her patients and colleagues" but comes across as annoying and hypocritical to me, she is the only character who I actively dislike and root against. George O'Malley (Intern) is a mousey person with little self confidence who finds his feet but comes across as weak and annoying. Derek Shepherd (Neuro-Surgery Attending) is Meredith's love interest right from the off after a one night stand the night before she is due to start at Seattle-Grace, is a man with overly moussed hair (seriously? who needs that much hair-product?) but is revealed to be one of the most highly renowned Neuro-Surgeons in the country. A highly likeable character who turns out to have both hidden depths and secrets. Miranda Bailey (Resident) the boss/team leader for the 5 interns we follow. Despite being aggressive and rude to many people she comes across as a funny and likeable character who isn't afraid of anyone and has a fearsome reputation within the hospital. Richard Webber (Chief of Surgery) the Boss-Man, very well written and acted superbly. Preston Burke (Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Attending) Arrogant but likeable, becomes Christina's love interest and boyfriend. Overall, this short series is excellent and I thoroughly enjoyed it, I deducted one star for the fact the the "Collector's Edition" was not really anything special, pretty much the first series in a new box.

If you're wondering whether to buy.... Buy it!!
I bought this series individually after seeing recommendations and quotes from the show all over the Internet. I'd enjoyed scrubs in the past, and enjoyed the hospital nature of the show, but was looking for something more grown up and dramatic. Boy did I get it!! Greys anatomy is funny, sad, dramatic, silly, medical, romantic, and just plain amazing. I bought this series and after watching just 3 episodes went ahead and bought series 2, 3, 4 and 5... And I wasn't disappointed. Since then I've bought 6, 7 and 8, and it had just kept getting better. It will make you roll around laughing and make you cry for, at and with the characters. One of my best amazon purchases yet. Take the plunge it will be worth it!!

GREAT SERIES
I have watched this series on tv and have enjoyed almost every episode. I would have watched them all again through the Sky system but they decided to take it down, so I decided to purchase this and all of the other series. They manage to combine some really light moments with some seriously gritty medical drama. For me, it is like a combination of 'Casualty' and 'Holby City' only much better. If you buy, I am sure that you will enjoy.

You have to rewatch to remind yourself how good this was.
Wow, this show started out strong and got better. If you don't like Season 1, no need to go any further. If you do, you have many seasons of some of the best drama there is. BTW, my cat is named Derek.

Must Watch Medical Drama Series
As I had never seen this drama on TV and I saw series 6 was being aired I decided to buy the first one to see if it was my cup of tea. I can only say WOW!!! I was hooked from the first episode and have now purchased box sets 2 to 5. It has everything - drama, laughter and suspense and the cast are terrific. I was doubtful about the claims that Greys Anatomy was better than the brilliant ER but I have to admit that the claim was justified.

One of the best comedies to come around in recent memory
Grey's Anatomy is a lighthearted funny medical comedy-drama that gives more insight into the doctors' lives than similar shows like House or ER. The main characters of the show are the five surgical interns assigned to Dr. Bailey, a resident at Seattle Grace Hospital. These aren't just any interns, they're surgical interns, the most cutthroat group of them all. Under the tutelage of Dr. Derek Shepherd, a neurosurgeon, Dr. Preston Burke, a cardiothoracic surgeon, and "The Chief" Richard Webber, the interns learn and grow. The show focuses not only on their cases and individual lives, but on the interaction the interns have with each other, their coworkers, and their patients. The interns are: Meredith Grey--daughter of living legend and super-surgeon, Ellis Grey. Dartmouth Graduate, though doesn't make it plain that she knows more than everyone else--at least not all the time. Owns the house that three of the interns decide to share. An overall nice girl. It's a shame for poor Meredith that on her first day as a surgical intern she discovers she's slept with one of her bosses, Dr. Derek Shepherd (otherwise known as Dr. McDreamy). Christina Yang--Brown undergraduate, Stanford Medical School, and overall overachiever. Christina Yang is smarter than you, and she's going to make it plain. Christina is the type of girl who if you were racing to the corner and you tripped and fell, she'd finish the race first then come back and see if you were okay. It works for her though and it's hard to dislike her for it. Alex Karev--someone has to play the bad guy, and on this show it's Karev. He's the doctor who will tell you that you've got cancer and then tell you to suck it up when you shed a tear. The good thing about Karev though is that his brutal honesty isn't covering up for anything. Occasionally you find yourself wondering if someone can really be so callous. Yes, they can. Izzy Stevens--Izzy is the pretty girl who people will always look at twice upon finding out that she's really a doctor. She paid her way through medical school by posing as a centerfold in a men's magazine and the male doctors don't want to let her be more than a pretty face. Izzy is the doctor you'd want to have if you were looking for compassion, and a kind word rather than the cold hard truth of the matter. George O'Malley--rounds out the merry group by being the peacemaker and the one who keeps everything balanced. It's blatantly obvious that he has a huge crush on Meredith, but he thinks no one has a clue. For some reason, Dr. Burke has picked George as his favorite. This group of interns offer humor, warmth, and usually some interesting turn every week. This show is the reason I watch television on Sunday, and for a little hidden insight check out greyswriters.com, where you can see what the writers were thinking when they came up with different story lines. This show is definitely worth taking a look at, even though the first season only has 2 discs with 9 episodes total.
