Review: Great - Great
Review: Amazing - ‘Hideout’, by Kakizaki Masasumi, when compared to other mangas of the same genre is quite a short work. With just one volume and nine chapters, it can take even less than an hour depending on how fast of a reader one is, one might not expect a lot of depth at all or any character development for that matter. However, Kakizaki actually manages to pull this through and spin a realistic and depressing tale in Hideout’s short length. The story follows and is entirely narrated by Kirishima Seiichi, a writer with a falling-apart career, a cold and hateful wife, and an only son who just died; who takes his wife on a peaceful island vacation in an attempt to revive their marriage. However, behind his façade as a doting husband, his idea of ‘starting over’ is different from what one might expect. So when things go wrong, quite literally starts living a nightmare somewhere deep inside a cave, he has to react and chose what to do from then on. Sounds overly cliché? Without a doubt. How many times has a story like this been published after all? Hideout somehow manages to pull it through though, and as soon as you start reading it pulls you in. It begins on an interesting and quite disturbing note, and just grows onto you from then on. It follows solely the protagonist and alternates between the present and some psyche-revealing flashbacks of the past and what led him to be there, which make the interest in the story grow as it progresses. Though the Kirishima Seiichi at first comes as a quite ordinary character, this first impression is quite deceiving, and all other characters follow in similar suit. What I liked the most about Hideout though was the ending and the chapters leading up to it. They presented a wonderful twist, which on top of the character development occurring in this surprisingly short work, made the story quite memorable for me. The story is one any fan of this genre has seen before – probably far too many times too – but it is brilliantly executed. It neither feels too short nor too long, it is exactly the perfect length. What I liked the most about Hideout was the air though. It is, in short, absolutely amazing. It would be worth to read this comic based purely on its quality, even if the story was lacking or bad. There is detail in every page and every expression. The shading and gore details work along perfectly with the story too, making for a wonderful experience. He managed to create a truly unnerving atmosphere through it. I can’t express enough just how good the art in Hideout is. Overall, I have not much to add to what I have previously said. Though the plot is nothing new and probably quite an overused trope, the execution of Hideout is amazing, and combined with the plot it definitely earns it 4 out of 5 stars. If you’re looking for a good horror short story, or something with an established plot but a great execution, then Hideout is definitely for you. I highly recommend reading it.
