excellent gear
I have not had a problem with this kit yet, but I have not caught a fish on it. I hope to get out to some more plentiful waters. I would have loved to have had this as my first fly rod. The rod itself has a great action, a nice medium moderate action. I wouldn't consider it a fast action. Fast action rods are a little stiff in my opinion and I have always preferred a more moderate mid flex rod like this, something I can actually feel the little fish hitting my nymph. The rod handle is not a high quality cork, but it does seem to be holding up. It has a manufactured handle with a cork appearance. It is not a pure AAA+ cork. It seems to be a Portuguese Grade AA. The reel seat is CNC machined aluminum with two locking rings which will make the rod slightly heavier than a comparable more expensive rod. I like the metal reel seat though for the durability and the corrosion resistance. No part of the rod has broken yet or become lose as I have read in other reviews. Seems to be solid. The handle is a little thicker than I would normally prefer, not as slim as some more expensive rods. It isn't too bulky though, still comfortable. The reel is absolutely gorgeous. The gold and silver plating is nice and has been holding up. The ad says it is a CNC machined aluminum, which is better quality than a dye casted aluminum. It has a very nice disc drag and the direction of the drag is interchangeable by flipping the center barring direction in the spool. There are videos on youtube from Sougayilang and other manufacturers about how to do this. Check it out. The rod and reel are both excellent for the beginning angler, even for the intermediate angler who wants a back up, extra rod, or a loaner... Maybe your're like me and you actually prefer it to some of your more expensive gear just because the action of the rod is what you like. I enjoy it very much. All other accessories included with this kit are great if you need them to start. I could probebly be like other reviewers and recommend upgrading the line to Rio, Scientific Anglers, or even Cortland... but the kelly green Sougayilang line that is included in all honesty isn't really that bad. It cast and catches fish just fine. It does everything I ask of it if not more. It lands delicately fishing a dry fly, and accompanied by the rod action it roll cast like a dream. On a traditional cast it is smooth and pairs nicely with this rod. The backing is backing, not much I can say. It's backing that should function for it's purpose just fine. The leader in this might be okay for small dry flies, you'd be best to get a better leader you're going to need a new one anyways down the road. The case and rod sock seem to be fine. I will be fishing with this kit exclusively until I catch a decent fish. The flies that come with this kit are not the best tied flies and they have some pretty crazy colors. They are all attract patterns, but you shouldn't through them out. I have seen blue gill and small bass go after a cigarette butt, so I am sure they will at least provoke a blue gill or something. The nippers are nice and I will try to use them. Over all this is a great kit, I would preferably replace the line with some RIO mainstream after a couple of seasons, but the Kelly green line it comes with should service a guy for two seasons.

Great beginner rig
I've been fly fishing for about 50 years, I bought this as a general purpose rig for my wife, who is a beginner. This is a fantastic beginner rig. The rod is a little heavy but it casts sweet, it's just effortless to cast accurately -- it'll reward good technique. I've always thought of fly fishing reels as glorified line holders, this is a *really* nice, lightweight line holders with a drag that works. The line will be fine for your first season. The flies aren't very helpful but the box will be handy. All in all a great value. UPDATE: We've had the rod for a year now. I should give it 6 stars for durability, it's still like new. We've caught some darn nice fish, it's a good lake rod. For stream fishing, it's starting to hold wifey back a little, due to weight and recovery (it's actually not *that* accurate, come to find out), so she is getting a new rod. I'm keeping this one because it's a GREAT bass rod. I think I'll over-line it, prob true 6 or a heavy 5 (the line is comes with is pretty basic). Catch me some fish by gum. The reel is fine, there's not much to fly reels for most freshwater fishing scenarios; long as you're not trying to haul in a San Juan piggie on a 6x leader it's fine. Set the drag barely tight enough to where you don't get a squirrel nest every time you strip the line and it'll serve. I'm still gonna give it 5 stars cuz this rig does what it's supposed to do, and then some, for a great price. A serious trout fisherman will outgrow it fairly quickly, but we still feel it was money well spent.

Great value, but...
I am new to fly fishing and on a budget. I'm not sure what a $300+ rod feels like, and I likely never will. That said, this rod performs great but really benefits from a 6 weight line. Has a nice flex that can toss dry and wet flies, as well as smaller articulated streamers well. The reel doesn't quite hold as much as I would think but is very functional and comfortable and definitely has a larger capacity than is likely necessary. Especially where and how I fish. The case is nice and has a good sized pouch for some accessories. The backing line is fine and functional. The fly box is of decent quality and holds a good amount of flies, but it absolutely functional. The foam doesn't heal very well though and will wear out and the box will need to be replaced. It's a great starter box. Now, the bad... The clippers are almost adequate but not good. The fly line is pretty ok, but I am certain it is more like a 4+ weight line and not quite a 5 weight, too light for the rod in my opinion. The loop braid gizmo to add on the end of the line is useless. It came off by casting and not a fish pulling it off. The leader is ok for small dry flies and will get you started but that's about it, not stiff enough to turn over even some of the larger flies that come in the kit. And the flies... they can catch fish... a couple times. But they're kinda trash. Bluegill ruin the flies that come in the kit after a bite or two, but some durability can be gained by painting the heads with a little clear coat nail polish or a dab of super glue. In all, the rod and reel are pretty great. The case is nice and the fly box is adequate. The backing line is fine and functional. Everything else is basic junk and should be replaced as soon as is practical. The add ons will get you fishing for sure. Get a decent 6 wt line and a selection of decent flies and this kit is fantastic. Even buying the cheapest rod, reel and case you can find will cost MINIMUM $50 more than this kit and that's without any line. Buy this. You won't be disappointed.

Superb rod and reel combo set for beginners
Overall very pleased with the purchase. I have some time before I hit the water, but the Sougayilang Fly Fishing Rod Reel Combos is everything needed to start learning to fly fish. Countless Youtube videos, knot tying... wealth of knowledge awaits. Very excited to try my hand at fly fishing for the first time. Thank you for having this quality rod and reel combo.

Pretty good
This fly fishing rod is a solid choice for anglers looking for a balance of performance and affordability. While it offers impressive functionality, there are a few areas where it could use improvement. Performance: The rod delivers smooth casting with decent accuracy and sensitivity. It's well-suited for beginners and intermediate anglers, especially for fishing in smaller streams or ponds. It handles lighter flies well and provides a satisfying bend when reeling in fish. Build Quality: The materials are sturdy and durable, ensuring the rod can withstand frequent use. However, the reel seat and guides could be more refined, as they sometimes feel less secure, particularly during extended fishing sessions. Ease of Use: The rod is lightweight and comfortable to hold, making it easy to handle for long periods. Its portability is a big plus for anglers who travel to different fishing spots. However, assembly and disassembly can be a bit tricky, with sections occasionally sticking. Room for Improvement: While the rod performs admirably for its price range, enhancing the reel seat's stability and improving guide alignment would significantly elevate its performance. Additionally, a more detailed user guide or instructions for beginners would be a welcome addition. Overall Impression: This fly fishing rod is a great option for those starting out or looking for a budget-friendly choice with solid performance. While it has some minor flaws, it’s still a reliable tool that gets the job done. With a few tweaks, it could be truly outstanding. For the price, it’s worth considering, especially for casual anglers or those new to fly fishing.

Perfect for the soon to be fly fisher!
I took the family on a camping and fishing trip before fishing season ended here last year. My Son has a fly fishing rod so he was pulling fish non-stop and started releasing them because he hit the limit. My 11 year old Grandson has a regular rod but wasn't getting a single bite so he was pretty bummed out. I got this for him as a Christmas gift and he's very impatient for fishing season to start. We've looked it over and he's done some dry casting. It seems very well made with all the starter items to go with. Easy to carry, easy to put together and functions just as it should. I will update when fishing season arrives.

DO NOT BUY THIS COMBO IF YOU ARE A COMPLETE BEGINNER!
If you are total beginner with no prior fly fishing knowledge, like me, this not the combo for you. The instructions are very poor. No instructions on tying backing line to reel, (you have to search you tube). The nippers are dull, and they say it includes a nail knot (you need to learn to tie this knot also) no instructions on how that tool works! They include a"loop connector" with absolutely no instructions as to what it's for! After hours on you tube instead of fishing I attached the backing line to the reel. Instructions do not tell you how much backing line to use, but since this a BEGINNER kit and you tube says more is better, so I spooled all of the line that was in the kit. So now you need the "nail knot" to attach the fly line. Again a visit to you tube and I attached the fly line. Careful unwrapping the fly line it birdnests' very easily. With less than 25% of the fly line spooled the reel was FULL!!!! That was the last straw! If you are an ABSOLUTE BEGINNER like me, I just wanted a kit I could just tie on a fly and fish, this is not the combo for you. Quality was on par with the price, but the aggravation and frustration took all the fun out! You will find there are many many ways to tie the various connections you have to make, and the few examples in the instructions are lacking, as beginner this can be frustrating as to what is the best knot. Combo is going back!!

You are Buying a Decent Rod, Reel and case. Good for trying out fly fishing.
Keep in mind you are paying for a great value rod and reel with a case. Can't beat the price. If your package arrives missing any of the other items don't worry. The rest of the stuff is trash anyway (except the backing, Dacron is Dacron). Throw everything else away. Order fly line, leader, tippet, flies and fly box from your favorite real fly shop. If you HAVE to use the crap that came with then here are some tips: 1. cut the small diameter "tippet" part of leader off and use just the butt section (the 'tippet' part will just break off anyway) and tie on some real tippet that you get from the fly shop. 2. Slide the bodies of all the flies down to the barb, put a drop of superglue on the hook shank, then slide the bodies back up on the shank ( the flies are not tied properly and will end up at the hook barb after the first cast anyway) 3. If you are so hard-up that you HAVE to use the fly box, then use it while saving money for a real fly box (you will only have about 3 weeks before the hinge breaks so start saving). 5 stars for the great buy on the rod, reel and case AND it arrived quickly. These three items are well built and will last as long as you care for them properly.

Great value for money.
For the price it did what I wanted it to do. Can't fault it. Caught a fish on my fist use, but I think that could be just chance.

Outstanding Customer Service
Great combo and outstanding value. It unfortunately came damaged and with a broken part. Contacted their customer service and new parts were sent out within a few days after getting all the relevant info - amazing. The rod performs well with the supplied line - not a sage but very good considering the price. The reel is very smooth so much so it will free wheel on retrieve - a little resistance or clicker would be better. The drag is even but have yet to test it on a big fish. The only issue is the line capacity of the 5/6 reel- it will only hold about 30 yds of backing with the supplied fly line which appears to be a 6 wt. The magnetic fly box and clippers are good and functional but the flys are not. Other than that I have no problems recommending this outfit for beginner or occasional fishermen who don't have unlimited funds. It is also refreshing to find a company that stands behind their products and offer outstanding service.

Good value for money.
Received my order well ahead of promised delivery date, I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of both the reel & the rod, the only down fall was a 4wt line being supplied as the rod is a 5/6 weight, but that’s no biggie. Cheers guys for a good all round value for money entry level package. 👍🎣
