Is this metal or plastic?

This one is a sturdy type of plastic but it has held up very well so far. No problems even in cold weather down to below 20 degrees.

Will this work on a 1 inch door frame?

I would love to answer your question with a positive or negative response; but I don't know what to say. I used this to replace an outdoor patio screen door with what was originally in its place but cracked. If I remember correctly the item cost less then $3.00 so my suggestion is to buy it with the hope that it completes your job - and if not, you're out less than the price of a gallon of gas.
