This year for my science fair project, I conducted an experiment which tested the biodegradability of four different "eco-friendly" glitter brands versus conventional glitter made of plastic. This was an important project to me because plastic glitter used in cosmetics is polluting our environment and is a major contributor to micro-plastics in our waterways. I did five trial runs, using 5 grams of each of the five types of glitter in mason jars filled with filtered fresh water from our local river. I left the glitter samples in the fresh water jars for a period of eight weeks. After this period, I filtered out the remaining glitter from each jar and weighed the glitter samples again, and subtracted this mass from the original 5 grams of glitter that I placed in each jar of water. I would like to congratulate you because your eco-friendly glitter brand, Minke Bio cosmetics, outperformed all of the other eco-friendly glitter brands I tested in biodegradability! Over all trials, Minke Bio Cosmetics glitter biodegraded by an average of 1.88 grams (out of 5 grams) after 8 weeks, while the other types of biodegradable glitter had averages that ranged from 1.3 grams to 1.76 grams. The conventional plastic glitter had an average of only 0.18 grams that biodegraded, which is barely anything at all (a major source of micro plastic pollution!).
