Can it be used straight instead of folded?

You could - however, it would be hard for it to stand up straight.

Is it too big for pictures will it stand up?

Whether it's too big depends on the size of the pictures and what you're trying to accomplish. Yes, it will stand up on its own.

Can it be used for a pictorial collage on an easel?

Yes, I think it would be great for that. It’s what I used it for.
