## Description

Formed in 1969 by Daevid Allen, one of the founder members of Soft Machine, Gong established itself as one of the most unique, innovative and experimental rock groups of the Seventies. Absurd, anarchic and powerfully psychedelic, 'Camembert Electrique' is the first proper Gong album. Originally released in France on BYG Actuel (a Charly label) in 1971, then licensed to a young Richard Branson for his fledgling Virgin label in 1974, this iconic and influential album is still devastatingly fresh-sounding in the 21st century. Weirdness, wisdom, outré rock of the 'highest' order - as you'd expect from the founding-father of acid-rock Daevid Allen. 'Camembert Electrique' is released as a strictly limited edition LP. For the first time ever, the album has been remastered from the original BYG master tape recently discovered and pressed on 180-gram heavyweight audiophile quality vinyl. The gatefold sleeve is a replica of the original LP and comes complete with all inserts. For all formats, the original track listing, correct song titles and timings, incorrect on every reissue since 1974, have been restored. Samples from 'Camembert Electrique' have been included on Gong's brand new album 'I See You' (Madfish SMACD1023) recently released to critical acclaim. Gong are also playing selected live shows playing material from their whole career…. "I have a distinct feeling that Daevid Allen is one of the few true geniuses that have been thrown up by the rock media . . . a Dylan Thomas of another age." - Steve Turner, Beat Instrumental, 1971 "This is a classic… Camembert Electrique remains undated after almost 30 years and hovers "strong and steamin'" over most of the Gong catalog." David Ross Smith, All Music Guide

    Gong man, far gong

This album had just been released as I entered High School. I remember it fondly and so had to get a CD version. My father called it 'Hippie Music', making the phrase a term of abuse. It may be hippie but the music doesn't abuse anything. Rhythms and themes are strong and Gilli Smyth's ethereal murmurings evoke the spaced out texture of the music. And not far from the surface there is great musicianship: As a jazz devotee I realise why I enjoyed (and am enjoying again) it so much; this is free jazz-rock ... and really good too! No surprise that the talented Theo Travis (sax) plays in the latest incarnations of the band.If you remember this album and feel the urge to acquire more Gong I would certainly recommend 'Egg' and 'You' - they take the jazz to a more even-handed level but are immensely enjoyable and funky.

    Camembert Electique Remastered................

..........and sounding just fantastic. The remastering from the original master tapes has been done really well bringing a more defined, focused sound, especially to the bass, drums and lower registers generally, giving this 44 year old classic a new lease of life. Also included is a reproduction of the original artwork which was not included with the 1974 Virgin vinyl release which is very similar to the booklet included with Virgin's 1973 release of ‘Flying Teapot’. The black and white photo which adorned the back of the Virgin 1974 release has also been reproduced here in colour and now clearly shows the late Pip Pyle wearing stockings and suspenders but somehow, he doesn't look out of place among his band mates. If you already have Camembert Electrique, you can invest in this remastered version with confidence and if you haven't, then this is the time to treat yourself to record which sounds like no other you've heard.Just a really wonderful tribute to late Daevid Allen.
