Many great recipes, but perhaps impractical

*by T***E on Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2020*

I also struggled rating this book because there are a lot of great recipes in there, and I intend to use some of them (some we had already been using variations of - chana masala, etc.) I think it is probably a good transition book, but I am still looking for a book that is both practical, especially for families, and vegan. My motivations for going vegan are because it was God's original command. But God also made the seasons, and things growing in different places. I struggle when I see cashew butter, and coconut in over half of the recipes. Can it be God's Will that I buy fruit from all over the planet? This is perhaps more my issue, but, when I looked at the cover of the book I had hoped - this is going to be it - a book about all local, raw, unprocessed, or half. I've recently come to the conclusion that the coconut milk in our diet was a setback to healthy eating, as well as things like veganaise. I read about a woman who ate all raw and cooked vegetables and fruits, and she didn't have to exercise beyond walking an hour a day, and dropped to a very ideal BMI. So, I was hoping this book would be more along those lines, because quite frankly I'm tired of exercising so much just to be able to eat oils/nut milks. I have 3 children and I'd like to spend more time with them. That is the other reason this book was not so great for our family - because it looked, from the pictures, to take a lot of work and arranging (maybe those were just artistic versions) to get that kind of setup for all the meals. Some of the things I suspect would be very time consuming (making your own brazil nut cheese). However then I saw some recipes in there like the butternutsquash soup and some of the curries that I already invested the time to learn, and I know they were worth it. It's just to see a dainty little sandwich that looks like it's going to fall apart just breathing on it and thinking of replicating that for lunch for 5 people, including the homemade cheese - it's...impractical for us.But honestly I believe this book contains fewer inaccessible ingredients / nuts than other books, and I think it probably has some recipes we could even share with poor people who only have access to standard vegetables.I would be so happy to see a book come out that was Seasonal Vegan By State. I am hoping the author considers writing one because the book is otherwise very well put together - stunning graphics, easy to understand recipes and instructions. I think it well fills a niche for people who don't yet have families. But it would be awesome to see the author make something even simpler. Like I'm going to the grocery store, here is what grew here locally in this season, here's the few long distance purchases I am going to make that required shipping stuff from other states; here's the VERY few things I am going to purchase that required international shipping - if any - and viola, here's my super palatable vegan cookbook that had no eco footprint to speak of on the planet, and didn't involve people being tortured say in the harvesting of cashews - burning their hands off collecting cashews, or suffering in child slave labor to produce cocoa - etc. Nope I can go right down to my farmers market and grow all the stuff in this book myself and it will taste great simple as it is!But part of me wonders if that requires a cookbook at all. Maybe it just requires greater maturity on my part. Greater self restraint. I keep searching for such a cookbook but maybe the answer is "well, dummy, you just go and buy some lentils, boil them, throw in some salt and tomatoes, rinse and repeat". "Also those greens in your yard, you snarf them 3 times a day." There's your cookbook. But maybe that would be too simple and maybe I am too immature to make that leap. I have no idea how I would get the children to embrace that. But I don't want to spend all my life acquiring and cooking exotic foods, although, perhaps, there might not be a better investment of time given the toxicity of processed food.I don't mean to indemnify the author. But these are all the thoughts I had reading her book.

This authors books are all so great. This encouraged me to buy a dehydrator - and I have used it every day since I got it. Great recipes.

    Delicious! Tasty!! Healthful!!!

Just got this book and so far it was been Awesome. I'm not a total vegetarian yet, but being a T2 Diabetic is what has brought me to this point in controlling T2. There IS something to putting the right kind of food into your body. Real Carbs. Really Food. NOT Fat, Not Salt, Not Sugar. Not the processed Carbs (breads, pasta, etc.). Those may work for some, but in my case it is different. As time goes by, I see the results and changes in my blood work from eating real food: fruits, vegetables raw or juiced. I also find that raw juicing (ONLY) really helps my body clean itself out, cleanse itself. The unique part is that I loose weight which is the bonus from all this. It was NOT my intentions when I started being more raw, but I'll take it. There's sooo much protein in veggies, along with the aminos, vitamins, minerals, and to much more. Give your body what it needs and it will give you health in return. Give it junk and you get junk ... in the formal of serious aliments and conditions. GIGO as they say. It's hard to not make food into a social meeting (going out to eat with friends, family). We over eat, over spend, and the choices given on the menu are not what our body needs. The meals given in this book are tasty, fairly easy to prepare (after a trip to the grocer, and Oooh Soooo good for you. The hard part (for me) is the deprogramming of bad food choices, and ordering healthy choices off any menu. I'm now enjoying more raw meals and this book makes it easy with their selection of meals/snacks through out your day. But, if nothing else, eat smaller portions. That's where it started for me. Excellent book to have in your arsenal for healthy eating and life style living.
