## Description

Initially created as part of a marketing campaign with Nike and iTunes, 45:33 was supposedly designed to be the ideal jogging soundtrack. If you’re familiar with the sardonic antics of James Murphy (a.k.a. LCD Soundsystem) you hear that background and wait for the punchline. Turns out there isn’t one, which--of course--might be the joke. Recreated here as a series of continuous tracks, the composition has the arc of good workout music: It starts slow, works up a lather, then gradually winds down. 45:33 is mostly played straight, a big, bright rave-up peppered with hypnotic melodies and tongue-in-cheek samples. After the opening disco-fied, downtempo piano motif, the beats soon drop, packing in a focused momentum and deep, insistent thumps. It ends with a sparse, ambient hum that, while done perfectly well here, has been done elsewhere before, and better. Overall, listening to the ultra-cool Murphy drop the pretense and cut a rug is too fun to complain about. Three other tracks are included here: a version of the single "North American Scum" and two b-sides ("Hippie Priest Burn-Out," "Freak Out/Starry Eyes"). In combination, the entire package feels a little thrown together but should satisfy those iPod-deprived souls who missed it the first time around. –Matthew Cooke 2007 CD release from the New York Avante-Electronic outfit, the much sought after (and previously a download-only) '45:33'. This cut was the band's iTunes collaboration with Nike and is without a doubt one of the most unique pieces of work you will hear all year. The CD comes with extra tracks thrown in for good measure (two previous LCD b-sides and a remix of "North American Scum"). DFA.

Review: Excellent Album! Good Sound. Hypnotic. - I first became aware of LCD Soundsystem through their "Sound of Silver" CD. I liked it so much that I also purchased "This is Happening" when it first came out and followed that up with "London Sessions." What a terrific bunch of CDs! At about that time I became aware that LCD was quitting and would have a grand final concert and that it would be out in the DVD format. Naturally, I had to have it. Well, it's the best concert DVD I own, out of a collection of about 25. Incredible! In any case, I enjoy James Murphy and LCD Soundsystem so much that I went back and purchased several more CDs, including "45: 33." Evidently this comes in several versions so I might indicate that I have the version containing the very long "45:33" track, plus three shorter tracks. All make for very good listening. The first track (actually 6 tracks) seems to play forever. It's long and drawn out with many interesting variations. My interest waxes and wanes as I listen to it. When I first listened to it, I became somewhat anxious wondering what all this was leading to. On later listens, I just relaxed and let it unfold. Very, very enjoyable! It's mostly electronic stuff, but has voices and a lot of acoustical instruments interspersed. Very nice mix. well done! All of the following three tracks are well done and make for good listening. However, I especially like "North American Scum - Onanistic Dub." First of all, what a neat song! I was in love with it from the first listen on the "Sound of Silver" CD. Then I got a quite different version on the concert DVD. It was equally good, I might add, just different. Quite different. Now here it is again on the "45:33' CD and sounding quite different than the other two. Onanistic dub; that's funny! Well, what the hey? If I love the song what's better than three really quality versions of it? The song on this CD is stripped down to a throbbing hypnotic electronic background with a woman vocalist in the background yelling out "North America" (the only vocals) at selected intervals within the electronic background. It's quite different than the other two versions I have and, you know, the Onanistic Dub could actually end up as my favorite version. Well, this is an excellent album. May I extend a plea to James Murphy? Please come back! It doesn't have to be as LCD Soundsystem. You're too great of a talent to lose. I'll buy anything you turn out. Trust me. Gary Peterson
Review: Excellent music; low resolution download - Here's is what I wish I had known before I purchased this as a download: the main album downloads at 216kbps. the extra songs are a bit better, but still not even 256kbps. if i had to do it again, knowing what i just told you, i would have purchased the cd, ripped it and resold it. not going to knock it down in stars (they represent what i think of the music). the rest is to help you, the consumer, make an informed decision with info i did not have, but wish i did.
