Turns out they've been putting out records since 1994, but I only first ran across them when this album on the Southern Lord label appeared on a Best Metal of 2017 list. Circle likes to use the label "New Wave of Finnish Heavy Metal," but they are in the krautrock lineage -- metallic krautrock. "Terminal" sounds like Amon Duul II infused with Black Sabbath. Plus a number of other ingredients. The long opener "Rakkautta al dente" starts with harsh black metal vocals and a Sabbath-style riff, and later morphs into a long psychedelic passage evocative of the '69 Dead before the riff returns. The title track, which deserves to be blasting out of radios everywhere, starts with a heavy riff and then shifts to a triumphant major key. "Saxo" starts with a choral chant, and then gives way to powerful Bowie-esque vocals. Several of the Amon Duul II albums are among my all-time favorites, and I am thrilled to find a band carrying on the psychedelic krautrock sound. Given that I've been listening to lots of metal in recent years, the metallic krautrock is perfect. CIRCLE ein musikalisches Chamäleon zu nennen, wäre eine ziemliche Untertreibung. Eigentlich hat die Truppe um Bandleader Jussi Lehtisalo seit 1994 auf bisher ca. 70(!) Studio-, Livealben und EPs so ziemlich alle möglichen musikalischen Stile bedient - auch wenn oftmals der als "New Wave of Finnish Heavy Metal" titulierte, krautrocklastige Stil mit ordentlicher 70er-Schlagseite dominiert. "Terminal" ist dabei ein fast schon klassisches Paradebeispiel der NWOFHM - es gibt hypnotische Motorik-Beats, Black-Metal-Screams neben 70er-Hardrockriffs und -vocals wie im epischen 12-Minuten-Opener "Rakkauta al dente", Anklänge von Alternative bzw. Noise Rock (wie im Titeltrack, der mich ein wenig an SONIC YOUTH erinnert, allerdings mit einem Glenn Hughes am Mikro), Songs wie "Saxo", die zwischen allen Stühlen sitzen, fast schon klassischen Heavy Metal ("Imperiumi" und die erste Hälfte von "Kill City", ehe das Stück verträumt-psychedelisch endet) und schließlich schamanischen Stadionrock mit "Sick Child". Fazit: ein wahnsinnig gutes Album des wahnsinnigen Kollektivs, in meinen Augen sogar eines ihrer besten - CIRCLE-Fans können hier blind zuschlagen.
