Online nurseries and box stores will try to sell you varieties that are not acceptable for your area. Second hurdle is getting a proper soil analysis especially if you have calcareous soil that can be determined by taking a soil sample, drying it in the oven for about 2 hours @ 175 degrees, then pouring some white vinegar on the dried soil. If it fizzs, you have calcareous soil and need some special testing called an AA extraction @ a higher pH to get usable numbers. Third, potential problems are with diseases and insects that can ruin your plants. That is where this book excels. It may seem to lead you on a "wild goose chase" sometimes, but eventually I came to answers that have been confirmed as correct by other sources each time. I wish it was an easier process, but this book shows how there are many variables involved in getting to the bottom of plant problems, and few "master gardeners" are willing or able to provide this level of advice. If they ever find a way to reduce the number of pages you have to skip around to in reaching the solution, it would be perfect. The only way I can see this happening is with a computer program version of the book. Until that is available, this is a fantastic accomplishment in providing great advice to any gardener willing to learn.
