Works well and well made
Bottom line: pricey but well made and works. I got this in the fall and have used it about 7 or 8 times for "campfires" in a 30-inch metal firepit. Works well and it appears to be well made (made in Rochester, NY). It's a bit high-priced even at the current price, which is 1/3 less than what it was when I bought it on Amazon. However, it does the job and appears that it will last, so I'm still very pleased with the purchase. It is "floppy," and although they say it shouldn't get too wet, I leave it out overnight and it's always wet from dew in the morning. No issues, I just dry it off and hang it up flat against the wall with a clip on a nail and it keeps its shape. Not sure how someone had their grass browned by it, but I use it on my lawn and it doesn't burn the grass. Shiny side goes up. It's always cool to the touch under a roaring campfire. As noted, you need to use a firepit with at least 1 inch clearance- very close or direct contact will probably be a fail. And if you leave it on the grass for a day or more, it will likely turn it brown. When I first tried it, I set the feet of the metal firepit directly on it, but the feet made permanent circular indentations in the silver fabric (but didn't cut into it), so I made some wooden feet for it and now the circles just give me a guide where to put them. When sparks land on it they don't seem to make any mark at all. The 36-inch size works well for a 30-inch firepit, with some room around the outside.

WOW! This thing WORKS!!!!
I admit I was a bit skeptical, considering all the other deck protectors out there are in the hundreds of dollars range, but this product had good reviews so I thought I would try it. I have a metal fire pit on my composite deck, and was worried that the radiant heat from the bottom of the firepit might either melt, warp, or discolor the deck since the slats are plastic. Prior to purchasing this item, I kept putting my hand on the deck when I had a fire going - to see how hot it was, and I would occasionally move the firepit around so that it wouldn't get one certain spot too hot. I was a little paranoid every time we had a fire going, so I ultimately decided to give this a try, and I am SO GLAD I did!!! Now, no matter how long the fire is going for, or how hot it gets, the deck protector underneath is still COOL TO THE TOUCH! I don't know how it manages to stay cool, but it does. I wouldn't believe it if I didn't experience it firsthand, but this thing is awesom!!!. Totally worth the money to have the peace of mind for protecting my nice deck. I thought it was going to be a rigid piece of material, but it is actually flexible and arrived rolled up in a poster tube. I unrolled it and let it lay flat for a while and it now has no curls or indication that it was rolled up for days during the shipping process. I put it under the firepit before I start the fire, and I remove it when the fire is done. I wouldn't want to leave it outside all the time because it is a fabric-type material. I just keep it indoors when not in use (under the sofa), near my patio door :-). Anyway, bottom line here is that you should get this because IT WORKS REALLY WELL!!!! A great value indeed! I will try and post a picture next time I have a fire burning, along with the temperatures of the fire vs the heat pad. You will be amazed.

Worth having
It worked well and I have good size fires in my 36" fire pit. You might get a little singeing around the edges but really does protect well. I forgot to put it down once and killed the grass. Three months later still hasn't grown back. Pricey but works and worth it. .

A must buy!
I have a Pit Barrel Smoker and this protects my deck just as the manufacturer said it would. We tested it on concrete and the heat did not penetrate from the bottom of the pit so we are so happy about this purchase. Plus it would be nice for under a Webber or any other round type of grill/smoker. Definitely a nice product.

Works well with my Breeo on my composite deck
I put this under my Breeo fire pit and have loved it so far. I first put this on the under the fire pit with a piece of paper between the fire pad and the concrete -- figuring that if the pad heated up it would brown the paper. I made a nice big fire that burned for a couple of hours; after I checked the paper and it was completely untouched. Next I put this on my composite deck, with some pavers under the pad, just to be be safe. I have since had many fires in my fire pit, and can even put my hand between the pad and the pavers and it is completely cool on the pavers. Whereas, just putting my hand under the fire pit a couple of inches while it is burning is not bearable. I don't think the pavers are absolutely needed, but I would rather be extra safe than worry about replacing composite decking. I do take my out from under the fire it and store it with my deck furniture cushions in a deck box when not in use. 5 Stars so far!

If extra hot and low to ground may need extra protection
First use with Urban Deci fire pit didn’t work well. Luckily had lid from 55 gal barrel and dollied 4 holes and used 4 bolts to raise fire pit. The extra room and air flow is all it took for adequate airflow to not burn asphalt or crack concrete. Excellent added protective layer. Will buy again.

A must have for anyone using a portable fire pit
I purchased this FirePad to put under my cast iron fire pit to prevent the grass from turning brown. It works great and reflects the heat away from the ground. Before I bought this pad my grass would turn brown where I used the fire pit. Now, with using the pad, my grass stays nice and green. Keep in mind that the fire pit needs to have legs that raise the bottom of the fire pit at least 2 inches away from the pad to work properly. The bottom of the fire pit cannot rest on the pad. This is a great product and will work well to protect grass, patio, or deck from heat damage.
