I was going to shave it off when done anyway, so was happy to use a permanent dye (temporary dyes apparently are rather messy). It was easy to apply (as described by the product) and created a nice even shade of black. It did stain my neck where I missed the beard, but that washed off easily enough with washing up liquid (look on WikiHow for half a dozen suggestions - I tried the first and it worked well).
