The pieces are made of foam and the box is excellent for storage. The only downside in my opinion is that all the pieces would be annoying to have to sort through each time a certain set of cards was going to be used. I solved this simply by sorting the different beginning blends into different baggies. The instructions suggest that you use by sets which includes many different blends at a time.
