As others mentioned, didn't need to turn unit off at all (my UPS powers two servers I was loathe to shut down). Simply remove the front panel, pull out the stoppers to release the inner cage panel, slide out the battery and slide in the new one job done. Takes 2 mins. The unit beeps and then starts charging the new battery. My servers never missed a beat in the whole operation.
