This helped to char and season the metal so that nothing would stick to it.After use, I wrapped it up in some paper towels coming in through it into my beer canister so that no animals or crawlies would get to it with any residual meat or vegetable odors.I haven't washed mine yet, just because I felt like I didn't need to. It's like a good cast iron pan. You just wipe it with some paper towels, let it sit in the fire a bit to burn off and Char any residual food material, then wrap it in a paper towel, and pack it back in your bag when done with your trip, or camping adventure.For the survivalist type people, this is a great little Grill to have in your get home bag, or bug out bag.
