## Description

Jackson,Michael ~ Invincible

Review: Album & Vinyl review - Overshadowed, understandably, by what came before, 'Invincible' is the often forgotten Michael Jackson album. However, those fans who bought it back in 2001 will tell you that it contains some of his best work that frustratingly never got the recognition deserved. A very public fall-out with Sony and lack of promotion (only one video from this album stars MJ, an artist known for his "Short films" and releasing at least 6+ songs from an album), meant this album failed to have any longevity in the charts and although very quickly reaching 10 million sales worldwide, 'Invincible' was deemed a huge failure. 16 years on and like 'HIStory' & 'Dangerous' the songs are so of their own genre (Industrial-Funk anyone?) and the production is so perfect, that they haven't actually dated and could fit in with what Beyonce & Co are releasing today. The ballads/slow jams on this album are up there with Michaels best. 'Break Of Dawn' is fantastic, 'Don't Walk Away' heartbreaking and what could've been a huge summer single, the duet with Santana 'Whatever Happens'. Special mention to 'Butterflies' which in my opinion is one of the best songs he ever recorded and criminal it never got the full single treatment. The uptempos are what you would expect from a 00's Jackson, hard, industrial, rapid, pulsating and totally unlike what was out there at the time (although the 'Invinvible' sessions did lead onto the singer 'Brandy' adopting this sound for her 'Full Moon' album, as they both shared Rodney Jerkins as producer. MJ even turns up on Brandy's 'It's Not Worth It'). The only uptempo to have a more commercial sound, was 'You Rock My World', the lead single and only hit off the album. It's the album highlight and still sounds brilliant 16 years on and makes you want to dance! 'Cry' was soft launched as second single with MJ absent from the video and zero promotion done, so flatlined. Shame as it can be heard as the younger brother to 'Heal The World' & 'Man In The Mirror'. Michael wanted 'Unbreakable' as lead single but Sony disagreed and when it came to it being touted as single number 3, all promotional budgets were halted after the underwhelming performance of 'Cry' and the public fallout ensued. With the promotion that previous albums received, this album could've easily sold upwards of 15m, however it didn't and 'Invincible' contains many hidden gems that never got the chance to shine. The Vinyl of this album is stunning. The cover for this album was always somewhat subdued compared to the grandiose covers of 'HIStory' & 'Dangerous' and the iconic images on 'Thriller' & 'Bad', however blown up to 12", the image really pops! It's those eyes! Cover aside, the packaging is minimal, like the CD booklet its lyrics, a hand drawn image and one mosaic of MJ striking a pose. im using a basic record player with built-in speakers so It wouldn't be fair to comment on the sound. (From what I can tell, its pristine) I LOVE my 'Invincible' vinyl and a great addition to 'Dangerous' and 'Bad'.
Review: Great Album - Great album that’s so underrated!
