A thin smear on the pistons protects them from moisture and won't degrade or warp your seals. A thin smear on the back of the new pads will prevent brake squeal. A thin smear on your floater pins will protect against corrosion and keep your callipers moving freely (floating callipers). Note, in all cases 'a THIN' smear! One tube should last a very long time. If you find one tube only lasts one rebuild, then you have used WAY too much grease around your brakes to be safe!
