Can this be placed horizontal , above a ceiling extractor fan , like the ones we have over the kitchen extractor hood over the hob??

This particular backdraft shutter can be installed vertically or horizontally as the flap has a non return, meaning it will only open up one way just take care to install it the right way round

What makes the spigot close, I don't see any springs? I use a sprung butterfly type and the spring is not strong enough which is why I'asking, thanks

My years old solid duct pipe through a wall is 4" (102mm) od, with an id of 98mm. this connector clearly won't fit, is there another solution?

This connector is designed to join two sections of vent pipe hence the raised section which locates between the two pipe ends• To fit this unit into a single pipe as in a normal bathroom vent fan it is necessary to remove the raised portion of the annular ring to reduce the diameter• i used a file and it fitted perfectly, silicon sealant can be used to fix the location within the tube. The tube has to be concentric otherwise the unit will be crushed and will not operate.

On a bathroom fan extractor assembly through a loft is it necessary to tape up the joints and if so, what's the best tape to use?

If your joining the tube to extraction fan and oven extraction i used a cable tie. I have not joined flexi tube to tube but if i had i would have used duck tape.hope this helps Dave
