Wilton Round Checkerboard Cake Tin Set, 4 Pieces

Great. I didn’t use it for a checkerboard effect on my cake. Just wanted some square layer tins and these were perfect. Cakes slid right out although I did still grease and line the tins. Even bake and flat tops.

I was so excited about buying this,and I'm not dissapointed at all.It works very well and the instructions are simple and clear.Just a small advice - it works out better with a thicker dough than with a more liquid one (in that case, the colours don't stay so well "straight")...anyway - it's fun to use it,I love the surprise when people do not expect something like that :-)

I was sceptical and Himself was dying to have go! We didn’t quite achieve the checkered result but passable! The tins themselves are great, greased and floured, parchment circles in the bottom and out came the cakes, no problem. The cakes are ENORMOUS! It is a huge 3 layer birthday cake! I started off with 150g/3.egg sponge mix for each of the three colors but had to make more. Next time, yes there will be a next time, I'll make 230g/5 egg sponge mixture for each colour. I think these tins and the divider are great value for money and I’ll ossibly have a go without HIMSELF “helping”!

Brilliant, non-stick pans. I use them for all kinds of baking and cooking! Have tried the insert for checkerboard, which is easy-ish to use but I need to find a runnier recipe as the ones I've tried are thicker so take a lot more work to divide and move around the circles. I would recommend this product though. whether you use the checkerboard divider or not, the pans are so far really good.

To be honest, I'm not sure that the illustrations on the box bear any resemblance to what can be made following what instructions are provided. As others have indicated, there are no instructions on quantities of cake mix. This can be worked out - I found each tin used about 10oz butter/sugar/flour and 5 eggs proportions. However, I have no idea how you're supposed to ease out the insert from the cake mixture before baking such that the edges of each segment are crisp so that the end pattern is a clean as shown in the illustrations on the box. Another drawback with following these instructions is that if you use different flavoured cakes as I did! some cook at slightly different rates and rise differently to others which makes a bit of a mess. I tried to use chocolate cake and orange sponge which are a fabulous flavour combination but the chocolate needed longer in than the orange. After making one cake which had the two outer rings with figure 8 type shapes when cut, and no sign of the inner ring, I tried another method. I made three cakes all of different flavours then when cooled, I cut across the top of each cake when it was still in the tin so that each cake was level then used the insert to cut through the cooked cake. The sections can then be arranged as required with buttercream mixed with double cream as "mortar" between the "bricks". Adding double cream to the buttercream makes it lighter and easier to spread without taking half the cake off. This is less messy and results in a better cake but it stil isn't as perfect says the box implies it will be. I hope this is helpful.

a great pan, takes some getting used to for the desired effects. the pan is good quality steel and the insert is thick plastic- maybe three insets would have been great as can be fiddly to get it in and our for use with the colourings to ensure you get the different colours in the different locations to cause the checkerboard effect but this is only a mild niggle.

This is an awesome piece of kit, as long as you cake batter is quite thick it goes really well. My only concern would be the cake instructions which are in just one type of unit measurement. It would be useful to have alternative units of measurements for those who may not know how to make a cake.

My children were so impressed with their cakes this thing was so super easy to use and even easier to clean after. I wish I would have bought this years ago :)
