Overrated accessories, but still a great blaster...
BLUF: As a manually primed, clip system blaster, the Recon has a lot to offer in a small package. This blaster will take any Nerf clip, even the 35-dart drum from the Raider. To fire, simply rack the gray slide on top, and squeeze the trigger. All the accessories (removable stock, barrel extension, flip-up sight, & "tactical" light) are fun, and compatible with any Nerf blaster sporting a tactical rail and/or stock mount. These, however, are purely for looks and take away from the blaster's basic functionality. In the case of the barrel extension, it degrades performance (as a general rule, longer barrels reduce muzzle velocity and range in the world of Nerf). PROS: Small (basic unit) Clip system Good range (w/o barrel extension) Highly modifiable Batteries not required to fire CONS: Primary tactical rail is on the moving slide (can get in the way of priming) Accessories add size and weight w/o any real benefit (save for looks) Technical Thoughts: With the core blaster, there is no barrel to speak of, so the Recon can have the range and power of the Maverick. And since it is manually primed for each shot, and no Slam Fire feature, it is extremely simple and reliable. However, since the slide is rather big (covers the top half of the core unit), there is a lot of plastic rubbing on plastic (friction) - it's easier for me to wrap my hand over the top of the slide and rack it that way. Unfortunately, that prevents the attachment of accessories on the slide's rail. I have yet to have a jam, and I don't think I would unless there are issues with distorted darts, or an improperly seated clip. As for accessories, the stock is the only real useful one for me, and as sights go, the simple flip-up doesn't do much for me in the way of aesthetics. As previously mentioned, the barrel extension is not only for looks, but it degrades performance. Simply put, the moment the dart leaves the chamber, any surface it touches will slow it down. A longer barrel just gives the dart more surface to scrape and bounce off of until its in open air. I attached the extension to my Rayven, and I noticed a marked decrease in range (upwards of 10-15 feet less). The light is fun toy, being able to narrow it's beam to a red "dot." Still, the beam's divergence is pretty high, and at several feet, the "dot" is already over an inch in diameter. So in the end, I keep the blaster and the stock, and the rest ends up in the closet.

Good clip system gun
The Recon is a good choice of weapon. It may be a fairly old design, but considering many newer clip system guns are essentially the same gun with a different look, it is by no means obsolete. The Recon is probably the best clip system guns out of all the manual ones without a slam-fire mode, and in my experience never jams unless you do something foolish like put a dart in backward. It will also not viciously shred your darts in the way the Deploy seems to. To be fair, I have never had the Longshot, and some people claim it is a better design. However, the Recon is more compact, and good luck finding an unused Longshot on the internet for under 50 dollars. The Recon, being a clip system gun can only use clip system darts unless you are enterprising and hack away some of the barrel. As reloading it requires you to take the magazine out, you will be defenseless while reloading unless you have a sidearm. That said, using magazines lets you reload large amounts of darts quickly (assuming you actually have extra magazines). It is nice that the stock has room for another CS-6 clip. In terms of range and accuracy, this is probably the best of clip system guns (excepting the Longshot which I have never tried). However, clip-system darts are the worst dart in terms of accuracy--they love to wobble and veer in random directions after flying 15 or so feet. So, despite the sniper-rifle-y design, it really is a better gun for medium distance. As far as rate of fire goes, it is toward the slow end of clip-system guns, easily outpaced by the Raider, Alpha-Trooper, and Stampede. So don't miss. You should know that you will probably never use the barrel attachment. Cool as it may look, it does drastically reduce the range (as darts bonk into it while exiting). Not using the extended barrel means you will not have anywhere to attach the light/"laser" sight. If you attach it on the cocking handle you will accidentally pull it off every time you cock it. That is OK; the light is too dim to see at any range in daylight, and will be useless outside. The stock it useful, and so is the flip-up sight to some extent. I personally use it on my Firefly because A) it looks cooler and B) that gun is actually accurate enough to make a sight sorta useful. Overall, good and reliable.

This is a very nice Nerf Gun
Easy to assemble. Good for small urban setting battles. Love the "laser" targeting system and the "tactical rail" attachments -- I wish the "iron sight" attachment would stay fixed to the rail when I use the cocking mechanism. My only reservation is that it's not automatic, or at least 3-round burst capable, but, that would require additional batteries. It also is a bit flimsy, so kids who are rough with their toys will probably end up breaking this quickly. I will buy an additional set of clips and darts. Overall, very fun to use. Highly recommended (if you allow your children to have "weapons" in the house.

Bring on the nerfinator!
Purchased two for my sons for this past Christmas after reading reviews on the product and similar nerf guns. Since this was to be our first foray into these types of toys, I wanted to be sure it was something that would hold up under a 10 and 12 year olds intense abuse. Of all the items opened under the tree, the guns were the ones that brought the most fun to everyone, as we created teams to maintain a steady supply of filled magazines. The guns are sturdy, and although plastic throughout, they do not bend or feel like they will break if you drop them. The initial loading of rounds into the chamber caused some concern as the bullets sometimes get blocked, but that is easily fixed by forcing the bullet forwards while the "ejection port" is open. No worries and you don't have to get your finger pinched. The bullets are foam of course, and can get torn or smashed if you're not careful. Our dog enjoyed one or two, so I recommend getting an additional supply. Assembly of the gun is quite simply, with the exception of the laser pointer battery. It takes a few minutes to figure out exactly how to open that piece and load the battery that came with the gun. Other than that, the gun can stay a pistol, or you can attach the shoulder piece, the laser, or the other pieces to make the gun more complete. The force with which the bullets come out is not dangerous, as tested by yours truly at point blank range several times. I recommend against shooting at heads however, as that just invites injury. Overall, a big thumbs up. I'm looking forward to purchasing other nerf guns and having a nice game with friends.

Educational if dissected, overall, fun
As the title says, the blaster is really only educational id dissected. Durable. Cock sometimes jams. Light not functional in the daytime, or in good lighting. Price has gone up $20 since I got it, and my last review. Extra darts a must, as sisters tend to shred them when shot. Extra clip convenient, not necessary (I've had mine for three years without an extra clip). Overall good gun. Very durable, Ive dropped mine on a wood floor several times, opened it up once, it still works. Occasionally shreds darts.

Bad product design, frequently 'pinches' the foam bullet
This is fun for kids, but the foam bullet frequently gets 'pinched' by the loading mechanism and ruins the foam bullet. My kid was only able to use it for one day, all the bullets got ruined. I returned it to Amazon, fortunately Amazon has an excellent return policy if you're not satisfied with the product.'

Fun Gun
I bought this during a Lightning Deal. Afterwards, I regretted not buying a second one. My son spends the mornings before school at a friend's house and figured that they would have fun shooting each other. It went on sale again, so I bought the second along with a package of 36 extra darts. We are still on Christmas break as I write this, so my son hasn't been to the friend's house yet, but by then he should be be a pretty good shot. He doesn't put the thing down. We got a pretty good price to play-valueratio on this toy and I would buy them all over again. Oh, the "laser" is a fun aspect too. Batterys are not included, but my son scrounged around the house and found two AAA's. Make sure you have yours.

Lots of fun
My kids are getting some nerf guns for Christmas, so I needed to get something to defend myself with. I got this on black Friday for a really good price. The gun can be changed into different configurations, but the assault rifle mode is my favorite. The "laser" site is great for play in the dark... but since it's not a real laser, don't expect it to be visible in the day. The clip system is pretty neat... but you might want to pick up an extra clip and some extra darts. It's pretty accurate, and the darts go a decent distance. Lots of fun!

Great fu - of you are ten!
Bought for my 10 year old son who has played with it non stop for days. I am now used to the feel of the foam bullets hitting my back (cheap shot) and his older brothers are also getting involved and looking to buy one themselves. Foam bullets are orange so easily found but worth getting a spare box of ammo when you buy the gun, just in case. Why did these not exist when I were a lad?
