A: Yes the frame can be used without the stand. It's very stable and doesn't seem to bend off the frame. It is a bit on the large side but it would work.

Bought this for my daughter and she loves it! The product is well made, solid, and easy to put together. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because, although it seems to be made so that you can attach smaller canvases, the manufacturer doesn't include any info to give you this option. My daughter doesn't like hoops because they tend to stretch the canvas in weird directions. So an option for smaller canvases would be very welcome in our house.
