### ⭐ 1.0 out of 5 stars

Product is defective, BILLIONS of collisions on main 2.4ghz SSID, while NO collisions on the Guest 2.4ghz or either 5ghz SSID's.

I wish I could give it NO stars! Not just because of the product problems, but because the company and customer service is HORRIBLE! I have been around Netgear, Linksys/Cisco, etc. modems/routers all my adult life. I have used several high end Netgear routers in my home and work, and I am an international cyber security expert, as well as worked for the FCC in Washington, responsible for the agency technology, so I know about setup, spectrum, channels, etc. A little over a week ago, I decided to upgrade to Comcast's 1gb service, so I chose another brand that was supposed to work with my provider (both confirmed by one part of Comcast's website, and Amazon). Long story short, it isn't compatible in my area and conflicting information on Comcast's site, so back it went. I decided to go ahead and splurge for the $400 Netgear C7800, as I didn't have much choice. I installed it, much fewer options for setup than other Netgear devices, but the basic settings should work fine... Well...who knows? I have it working with Comcast on the 2.4g Guest, 5g and 5g Guest networks, but anytime I connect ANY device (and I tried several) to the 2.4g main SSID, I got collisions into the BILLIONS! That is not an exaggeration! I started to dig into why the speed was not so good (almost half the speed I was getting from the Comcast equipment at 150-200 vs. Comcast's modem/router at 300-400!) I did get nearly 1 gig on the wired ports, so that was good. I managed to use my Guest 2.4g for my 2.4g devices (allowed ability to see other computers on my network) with no collisions for now, but no dice on the main 2.4g. I spent an hour troubleshooting with Netgear Tech Support from India, only to play "let's throw a dart at options to see what might work, regardless that there is no logical way they would fix it," and "whack a mole." I told him exactly and concisely what the problem was, and what I tried, to no avail, having to repeat it 5 times over the course of the hour. I asked multiple times to get to Level 2 Support as well as his manager, with no success. At one point, he put me on hold for ANOTHER HOUR, supposedly trying to get me to someone else. During that wait time, I called in again from another phone, and after 20 minutes, finally got another technician that told me he couldn't get me to a manager either, as "he" was busy and they were having problems with accessing Level 2 Support. i agreed to have them call me back. 4 hours later, at 10 p.m. EST, I get a call back from a Manager, only to still not have the actual issue documented properly, and offered to "try" to get me to Level 2. I waited another 30 minutes to try to get to Level 2, when he came back on the line and suggested that the best course of action is to get a replacement. If Netgear sends me a replacement for a brand new C7800 bought two days ago, they would send me out a REFURBISHED unit and I would have to PAY for shipping charges! REALLY??? He suggested I go through Amazon to get a NEW replacement!Their customer service has never been great, but this was as bad as I have ever seen anywhere! I feel sorry for people that don't as much experience with technology, dealing with these people. At one point, they were just making stuff up about distance from the modem/router with the wireless being too close, interference possibilities, channel saturation, normal collisions, number of devices causing collisions, etc. Really? If any of that was remotely true, why would the Guest 2.4 work perfectly with no collisions, yet the main 2.4 generating billions of collisions for just one device, on the same channel and settings, other than the SSID?I am very disappointed and this is not the first Netgear product recently that has not been as advertised. Buyer beware and good luck if you have to go with this modem/router.

    NOT for Comcast Infinity only

*by K***Y on Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2017*

THIS IS NOT FOR COMCAST ONLY! It is also compatible with Cox internet. And probably many other internet provider services!!! It is a Great router. Very fast. Good range. The Amazon description is EXTREMELY MISLEADING. I do NOT have comcast infinity service. My wifi and cable provider is COX! I called Cox before I purchased this and was told that this IS on their list of approved modems that work with Cox service. After I purchased this, I called Cox to come to my house and set it up because I am not at all tech savvy. You could probably easily do it yourself. As it turned out, it was a good thing that I did call the Cox man because even he had trouble installing it. The trouble that the Cox man had was due to Amazon's fault - it was not due to any difficulty in installing it. Amazon shipped me a router that had a serial number on the outside of the box that did not match the serial number of the modem inside the box. and a different, non matching serial number was on the modem. The Cox man did not realize it for a while and that was why he had so much trouble trying to get it up online. Once he figured out that Amazon put the wrong item into my box and he got the correct serial number, then it worked right away.I am wondering if any accompanying documentation or warranty is supposed to be included in the box with this modem because my box had nothing in. It. I suspect that this had been opened and returned and mispackaged by Amazon afterwards and then sold to me. If anyone else leaves a message here can you please state if there was warranty or paperwork that is supposed to come with this. All in all, I DO recommend this modem. My test speeds have greatly increased. Am not positive but I think my Cox internet plan is for speeds of up to 50 and I am getting average speed readings of downloads 75.01-75.32 Mbps and uploads average speeds of between 5.29 and 5.67 Mbps.It is rather large. It is flat with 4antennae that stand 7 1/2 " high. The depth is 7 1/2 " and the width is 12 1:2". It is a medium weight. I highly recommend and I would buy it again. It is not too heavy. I hope this helps someone. I just wish I knew how to register my product and that Amazon had not switched boxes on my modem!

    Good but not great

*by R***L on Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2018*

The Nighthawk X4S is a great "all-in-one" modem/router. According to the Ookla speed test that I ran with my old DOCSIS 3.0 modem and this one yielded similar results so no benefit right now until DOCSIS 3.1 is deployed. I live in a condo where there are several other units with WiFi so channel strength and interference are tough to balance. The one minor flaw that the X4S has versus my older Asus WiFi router is that the channels are much more limited with the X4S. With my old WiFi router I could access channels that none of my neighbors were using. Unfortunately, you can only set the X4S to "common" channels so you will have interference if you live in a condo like I do; however, I do not notice any drop in WiFi and the range is bit better. The unit is huge. By looking at the pictures alone, I thought it would be comparable or not much bigger than other WiFi routers. Additionally, the light are very bright and illuminate my closet. The app and online interface are not as intuitive as the Asus interface but functionally similar. Basic and advanced settings can be set but navigation can be a little cumbersome if not annoying on the online interface. I have smart plugs throughout my condo and the Netgear app likes to consolidate or treat them as one item. I use the TP Link HS105 and HS110 smart plugs. I have 9 across my condo but can see only one HS105 and one HS110 when I have 4 and 5 of them respectively. This doesn't affect functionality but it doesn't accurately list all items connected to the router. These little things do not hinder the function of my smart devices or slow down my WiFi experience but for the price, I was expecting a bit more so one star deducted.
