The Harmonium Handbook

This is an excellent and profusely illustrated introduction to an unusual instrument (unusual at least here in South Texas) - - written in a lighthearted and thoroughly approachable style. I'll bet you don't have a harmonium (heck, you may not even know what one is) but for those of us who do it's a very handy guide should you decide to investigate its very interesting history, or its guts. Yep - - that's right, the author not only guides you through degutting your instrument but provides plenty of photographs to help you along the way should you find you have to make adjustments to it or tune it (which he advises you probably will; I certainly did). THE HARMONIUM HANDBOOK won't ever make the best-seller lists, but for those of us who love the harmonium and its bigger relatives (such as the reed organ) it's a very welcome little tome. It even has tips on how to play the darn thing, with examples. Squeeze on.

I just bought my first harmonium and this guide has so much information to help me out: how to play, the functions of parts, repair and adjustments, and history. Appendix of chords and chord inversions. Highly recommended if you want to know the basics of the keyboard instrument known as a Harmonium.

Unless you bought your harmonium from a store that does a good setup on the instrument, chances are you'll need this book. Too many harmoniums out there are out of tune, leaking air, or wheezing. That means they don't get used and discourage their owners from practicing. This book has tons of helpful info for fixing your harmonium. It's a good place to start if you're looking to gain skills in this area. Other skills you'll learn as you start to do repair or maintenance work and develop your own techniques. The playing-learning section is ok, but I've yet to find a good learning source for lessons. It would be great to see a DVD how-to to accompany the repair techniques discussed in the book.

This book is a wonderful resource for just about anything you want to know about the workings of a harmonium. The author is an engineer and it shows. His details and descriptions are basic and to the point. I can say that if you or someone you know wants to learn about the harmonium - how to fix or tune - this is the book for you (or them).

Excellent handbook to learn how to care and fix your harmonium. It provides a brief history of its evolution. I was able to fix two rattling reeds and two other that would not sound.

Book covers lots of details, but instrument's pictures are horrible. you can not figure out anything in those pictures which is very disappointing.

As a new harmonium player this was recommended to me and I must say it is a great resource. It not only explains the instrument but shows you how to repair simple problems. I would recommend this to anyone with a harmonium.

There are not a lot of books on The Indian Harmonium. Thus this book fulfills a need. However, I recommend the editors and authors use modern technology to illustrate instead of using old black and white faded quality photos. Additionally, lots of unnecessary information which swamps the bits of practical information.

Wer sich ein indisches Harmonium gekauft hat und damit auch wirklich spielen will, wird schnell herausfinden, dass Qualität ihren Preis hat und dennoch bei diesen Instrumenten anderen Standards folgt, als wir das hier mit "Made in Germany" verbinden. Es geht schon bei der Kaufentscheidung los: Mit "Coupler" oder ohne, diesen rechts oder links, "Drones", "Tremolo", "Organ Tune", "Scale Changer" and wie viele "Stops", male or female reeds und davon wie viele??? Manches kann man in Youtube anhören, aber eine Übersicht und Vergleichbarkeit bekommt man nur in einem Laden, der auch die ganze Bandbreite der verschiedenen Modelle vorführen kann, der berät und sich um den Einsatzzweck kümmert. Der eine will deutsche Folklore mit diesem Instrument begleiten, der andere Mantren damit singen. Jeder kann zu seinem Instrument finden, wenn er die entsprechende Beratung erhält. Das vorliegende Buch kann hier enorme Hilfestellung geben, wenn man denn bereits ein wenig Ahnung hat, wie so ein indisches Harmonium funktioniert und aufgebaut ist. Vor allem ist es aber ein absolut guter Ratgeber, wenn dann zuhause etwas nicht so klappt, wie es sollte, dann ist guter Rat oft teuer, meist aber auf jeden Fall meilenweit entfernt. Und dieser Tag wird nach meiner Erfahrung auf jeden Fall und bei jedem Instrument eintreten. Vermutlich ist es ganz einfach wie beim Auto: Wenn du die Werkstatt um die Ecke hast, die Karre nicht unbedingt brauchst und genügend Flocken in der Tasche hast, dann brauchst du kein "Jetzt mache ich es selbst-Buch" im Kofferraum. Wenn du aber in Hinterpfuiteufel wohnst, dann ist das ganz beruhigend, zumindest in einer Zeit, als man Autos noch mit Werkzeug reparieren konnte. Aus dieser Zeit ist auch das indische Harmonium und darum empfehle ich dieses Buch jedem, der sein Harmonium wirklich spielen und in Schuss halten will. Darüber hinaus bietet es eine Menge von wissenswerten Informationen zu den verschiedenen Spieltechniken. Für mich ein Standardwerk, sozusagen die Bibel für Indisches Harmonium, die kaum eine Frage auslässt (Woher bekomme ich Ersatzteile und ein wenig Materialkunde wäre noch wünschenswert). Und es ist das einzige Buch dieser Art. Kein anderes Werk hat auch nur annähernd so einen ausführlichen und kompetenten Technikteil oder informiert über die Verwendung, wenn man nicht unbedingt indische Musik damit spielen will. Und ich habe vermutlich mittlerweile 95% aller weltweit verfügbaren Bücher zu diesem Thema gelesen oder zumindest durchgeschaut. Für mich also ein Muss, mit einer kleinen Einschränkung... man muss Englisch können, wenngleich das sprachliche Level nicht allzu hoch ist. Und nochmals als Tipp: Instruktionen für Reparaturarbeiten am Instrument und zur indischen Spieltechnik findet man bei Youtube und Co. reichlich, das Buch ersetzen sie aber nicht, weil man erst einmal lernen muss, wonach man zu suchen hat!!

This is a very good book on the workings of the harmonium. I had two stuck keys on my new harmonium after travelling back to Ireland from Asia with it and nobody in Ireland to repair it for me. After reading this book I was confident to do my own harmonium repair which only took me 15 minutes.

A harmonium is a complex instrument when it comes to first understanding how to handle, care, and play it. Mine came with no instructions, so without this book I would have had absolutely no idea what to do with the instrument. The book speaks of the history, mechanics, playing, and maintenance of the harmonium. This is also the only book I have seen with enough information to assist someone who is new to harmoniums. If you are interested in playing harmoniums, read this book.

Libro stampato in America, ottimo anche per evntuali riparazioni dello strumento. Fatto molto bene e MOLTO chiaro. Ovviamente è in lingua inglese, ma di facile traduzione, come nella tradizione degli Handbook americani
