The expansions from each end are 12 inches wide. The notches for holding them in place are 9 & 1/2 inches outside to outside. **Q: why would anyone buy this for $399 when they can be gotten at rural king delivered for $298?** A: Make sure you are comparing apples to apples. The older model of the work plank is only rated for 250 lbs. The new model doubles that rating. If you are sure you're getting the new model, go for the cheapest price, but be sure to factor in shipping. **Q: How long is the board when collapsed all the way? Or is it 8ft ?** A: Fully collapsed, mine is exactly 95 inches long. **Q: how far can it extend past a support point without bending/breaking under load? like tie it down across the back of a pick up and then extend it out** A: Unit has a built-in stop to prevent over-extending.
