They take a couple of seconds to open or close. Great for RV tanks as you can barely hear them work. I haven't had one malfunction yet with gray water or debris. I got them on multiple tanks under the RV for almost a year, no problems (I do spray silicon lubricant into each valve every 6 month to avoid salt water corrosion).
