CD

Review: Absolutely VITAL Fusion - This monumental achievement by WR is surely one of their top 3 records, though note it is more groove-oriented and ambient than their others. The six tunes cover an amazing breadth of mood and every song is truly great (no need to single out one). Heavy percussion complements heavy bass lines which are lustrous acoustic on some tracks and electric on others. The sax soloing is sparse and atmospheric --even by Wayne standards-- and always magnificent. Together with MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER (likewise groove-oriented and ambient), TAIL SPINNIN' and BLACK MARKET you have four of the great fusion/ world/ ambient releases of all time. You can't go wrong with those -- each and every track.
Review: Funky and Cerebral - A to the point reminder that Joe Zawinul was bringing the funk from the beginning with the great Cannonball Adderley bands. A pivotal moment for the band as Zawinul's funky Rhodes joins with the cerebral genius of Wayne Shorter...Miroslav Vitous ingenuity working Arco bass like a horn, the crazy crazy polyrhythmic percussion section and the secret weapon...Andrew White on electric bass and oboe! I called this album funky and cerebral it would be a mistake not to notice how those qualities inform one another in the music and the players making it. My favorite is Miroslav's "Will" but everything is top notch and deeply enjoyable. FIVE EMPHATIC STARS!!!

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Giving fusion a good name
*by W***S on September 5, 2019*

The mid 70's witnessed the joining of jazz and rock(sort of) into a tentative style called fusion that rode roughshod over the musical landscape for a few years with mixed results. Weather Report arrived with full cred and within a decade were the compositional kings of the genre. Well conceived and played, the songs were always first with this band and this, their third album, is no exception. Wayne Shorter, people!!
