**Q: Can you put a padlock on it to lock it**
A: Yes..absolutely!

**Q: Would this work for keeping open a bedroom door?**
A: Like the other respondent said, a little modification may be necessary to mount the latch/strike on a hollow core interior door, depending on where you'd be mounting the latch.  Any reason why a simple magnetic/friction doorstop won't work?

**Q: What is the diameter of the post?  I have a post which is 17/32" on an existing gate and need a latch which will accommodate it.**
A: I would say yes. As there is room around the latch when it is closed to allow for some wiggle room.

**Q: How long is the locking bar (ball end)?**
A: about 2"
