Spectrophotometers measure light at different wavelengths like colors of the rainbow. This device simply measures the intensity of "visible" light. On a sunny day where there were puffy clouds, the visible light did not change at all when the clouds passed over the sun, but the companion UV detector (also from the same outfit) showed a remarkable drop in UV intensity when a cloud obscured the sun in an otherwise blue sky. To use this as a component of a spectrophotometer, you would need to use it in conjunction with your prism or diffraction grating and the light box - I don't know what its range of sensitivity is, but I would expect response from 700 nm (red) to 400 nm (violet) and the UV meter sensitive to UVB down to 360 nm wavelength. It might work - I did not try it for that application. It'd be an interesting experiment just to measure what wavelengths the device really IS sensitive to (use the sun as a source as its color spectrum is known). Eyes are most sensitive to light in the 550 nm (yellow) range, so this detector might also be more sensitive to yellow than to red or violet all by itself. I had used it for a failed science experiment where I wanted to see if the UV light diminished at the same rate as visible light during a total eclipse of the sun, but the eclipse was clouded out for the most part and only 3 seconds of totality visible at St Joseph Missouri.
