I did not attempt to test that. The top comes off with the push of a button on top. Very nice, very easy to fill. The only "ding" I can give is that the capacity is only about 1/2c or 120ml. That is okay for home use, but I don't see it useful in a pro kitchen. The instructions are very clear, very informative. There are two other buttons for a total of three: black, red, and silver. So, if you have different peppercorns in different mills, you can mark them. The instructions are VERY CLEAR - DO NOT USE FOR SALT. Mannkitchen says they have a salt cannon, but I do not see it on desertcart. Use of SALT in the PEPPER cannon WILL corrode the workings. This comes in a box perfect for gift-giving.
