My alarm system doesn't use targeted addresses, so no programming was required. Just attach the wires and mount. The keypad defaults to non-targeted mode. Where I got into trouble was with the 4 programmable keys. It's really difficult, impossible, to find any documentation on how to program them. I ended up issuing a panic alert by mistake. I had to call the monitoring center to stop them from rolling a squad car. I realize that the programming function may be more on the alarm system than the keypad. Unfortunately, the documentation for the keypad and my alarm system are really lacking here. Apart from this, the keypad works. I'll just stick to the alphanumeric keypad. Review: Wonderful product but beware your security company - Easy to install - just follow the directions on the box. I had to replace an old 6150 because some of the push buttons were no longer responding. I called my home security company (Guardian Protection) just to let them know that I was powering down my system. They proceeded to tell me that my newly purchased 6150 would not work because it was not "precoded" by Guardian (not true). When I asked if I could purchase one directly from Guardian, they said that they don't offer the 6150 any more but would be happy to upgrade my entire system for $800 and jack up my monitoring fee by 25%. There is also another issue that you may experience. The keypad address of the new keypad must match the old keypad address. The addresses are one of these 16, 17 or 31. To change the address of the new keypad do the following. Depower the new keypad, repower, press and hold the 1 & 3 keys till you see the current address,press 00 (to clear), ** (the number from the old keypad) then * to exit.
