does the lip on the bottom have a quarter inch or so of space ?

The bottom is somewhat “u” shaped. The top of the “u” looks to be a quarter inch, but narrows from there. I use mine for a Wacom tablet and it fits perfectly. JA

I draw on my 11 inch ipad pro in portrait mode with my hand resting on the bottom/right. Will the lip that holds the device dig into my hand/arm?

No necessary . I have just tried with my 12.99 inches iPad 2020 in portrait mode and resting the hand on the bottom right of the iPad..... I felt alright also depending of the angle and position ... But it seems a good stand.... I like it . JAVIER
